PlayStation and Xbox are both rumored to be making big next-gen announcements this month, and they almost definitely have to reveal to the price at this point.

The next generation of console is so close we can almost taste it. We know what they will be called, some of the titles that will be released on them, even information on the inner workings of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X. What continues to blow our minds at this point is the fact that we still don't know how much these consoles are going to cost.

There is good reason for that, although it isn't a reason that is going to comfort consumers. Both Sony and Microsoft are terrified of having their prove undercut by the other, as has happened in the past. The thing is, those aforementioned inner workings are so similar in both consoles there is very little chance of that being able to happen this time around.

According to former Game Informer editor Imran Khan, and first reported by DualShockers, consumers will know the prices of both the PS5 and the Series X before the end of August. "From what I’ve heard, both have to talk about hardware this month – in terms of pricing, availability," Khan revealed during episode 32 of the Kinda Funny Gamecast.

PlayStation will hold a State of Play later this week, however, it has made it very clear that it will feature no new information regarding the PS5. There have been rumors that it will make a major PS5 announcement before the end of the month. In terms of Xbox, Phil Spencer himself has hinted at the same thing for his brand. At this point, we can probably expect to find out the prices of the respective consoles on the same day.

Leaving it any later than August might not even be an option considering the proximity of the consoles' release date. While still vague (Holiday 2020) that time of the year will be upon us before you know it. Retailers selling the consoles need to know how many units they will have at their disposal, and how much those units will cost. Plus, once the prices have been revealed, PS and Xbox can continue to make blockbuster announcements they have hidden up their sleeves to drives preorders and sales.
