The PS5's next major software update goes live tomorrow, and it includes features players have been waiting to make the most of for quite a while.

The PS5 might have already been on the market for ten months and sold more than ten million units in that time, but there is still room for improvement. In fact, the console will undergo some pretty major improvements when its new system software update lands tomorrow. PlayStation published a blog revealing the news which details everything new coming to the console, and there's a lot to wade through.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is the rollout of SSD storage expansion support to everyone with a PS5 who downloads the update. The feature has been tested by a lucky few and it now seems PlayStation is ready to roll it out to everybody. It means starting tomorrow, you will be able to insert additional storage into your PS5 on which you can store and play both PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps and anything else you might want to keep there.

The other big addition to the PS5's technical repertoire coming tomorrow will be the option to experience 3D audio through your TV's speakers. PlayStation has really been working hard on how to further engage players' other senses via the PS5. The DualSense, which deservedly gets the credit for most of that work, will use its mic to measure the acoustics of your room, thus optimizing the PS5's 3D audio and tailoring it to you and wherever you play your games.

The update also includes enhancements to the PS5's UX. Once the update goes live and has been installed, you will be able to freely customize your control center. Perhaps most importantly of all, if you have PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game installed, they will appear separately under the installed games tab. Which version is installed, and sometimes which one is being played, has been a point of confusion for a lot of players since launch.

That's still not all. PlayStation has also added something called a Trophy Tracker. You will quickly be able to access as many as five trophies per game via the control center, allowing you to check on them without having to leave the game completely and then jump back in. The update will also include improvements for the PS5's remote play features, including the ability to stream using mobile data when a WiFi connection isn't available.
