As PlayStation and Xbox gear up to release their next-generation consoles during this year's holiday season, a number of games have already been announced that players can expect. Whether they are ports or brand new entries, the games will be the first ones to release, and as such, demonstrate what the consoles are capable of. However, if NBA 2K21's price listing is anything to go by, there is a chance that PS5 and Xbox Series X games will cost $10 more dollars than current games.

The information for the possible price increase comes from GamesIndustry.biz in which Yoshio Osaki, president and CEO of games research firm IDG Consulting, explained that the price of games has remained flat since 2005, while the price of TV and movies increased by a decent amount. Osaki further explained the possible price increase by saying that production cost of next-generation console games increased by 200% to 300% (depending on the studio and genre) but the prices of the games remained at $59.99. For reference, Osaki stated that the last time the price of games increased was in 2005 and 2006, when the price went from $49.99 to $59.99 - that is when the Xbox 360 and the PS3 came out.

In other words, as more advanced consoles came out, the production of games had to increase in order to fit the consoles, while the games themselves remained at the same price. In comparison, the price of movie tickets increased by about 39%, while Netflix subscriptions increased by 100% and Cable TV packages increased by 105%. As a result of all that, and in order to catch up with the prices, PS5 and Xbox Series X game publishers are considering a $10 price increase for their games.

In regards to NBA 21K21, 2K said that the price increase was meant to reflect the development "from the ground up for next-generation consoles," as well as "the value of what's being offered." Although the value aspect of "what's being offered" can be seen as completely subjective and up to personal interpretation (some people may see no value in NBA 2K21 while others might, for instance), the "next-generation consoles" comment be agreed with since new and more powerful tech is being implemented into them.
