PSG Talon, a Hong Kong team formed in partnership between Talon Esports and French football club Paris Saint-Germain, has announced that it will field two substitute players in the 2020 League of Legends World Championship play-in stage as a result of "travel restrictions and visa requirements.”

According to PSG Talon, jungler Kim “River” Dong-woo and mid-laner Park “Tank” Dan-won won’t participate in the play-in stage since they are currently under quarantine in Shanghai. The Korean players will be replaced by AHQ Esports' Hsiao “Kongyue” Jen-Tso and Chen “Uniboy” Chang-Chu.

In addition, star bot laner Wong “Unified” Kit is also expected to miss several games in the play-in stage and be replaced by Machi Esports coach Chen “Dee” Chun-Dee. PSG Talon says the substitutions will only be for the play-in stage, though it seems unlikely the team will qualify for the Worlds main event without its star players.

"Thank you Machi and Flash Wolves in helping us arrange everything with Dee in such a short period of time," PSG Talon said in its statement. "Given these setbacks our objective remains the same. We will put on our best performance and represent the PCS with pride."

PSG Talon has had a difficult 2020 season. Although the team excelled in the newly formed PCS league where they defeated Machi Esports in the final to win the spring split trophy, it struggled in the summer after star mid-laner Kim “Candy” Seung-ju exited the squad, forcing PSG Talon to recruit Tank, who had to play with a higher ping from Korea.

The roster changes have impacted the team’s results, though they were still able to finish the regular summer split in third place with a 14-4 record after improving during the playoffs. Although the team qualified for the final in the upper bracket, it lost a 0-3 series to Machi Esports, yet qualified for Worlds as the second seed. However, the substitutions are expected to impact the team’s coordination despite the individual skills of the players.

The 2020 League of Legends World Championship will be held from September 25 to October 31 in Shanghai, China.
