PlayStation fans have a lot to be excited about with the release of the PS5. Not only will there be exciting exclusives for the upcoming console, but PSVR is going to run a lot smoother on the PS5.

Last year, the PlayStation VR system was said to have made Sony $2 billion, selling 4.2 million units between 2016 and 2019. In addition, Sony claimed that there had been 21.9 million virtual reality games sold between the release of the device and August of 2018. Of course, that doesn't mean that the device didn't have detractors. Microsoft outright said that the Xbox Series X would not launch with a VR device and CD Projekt Red claimed that they were unconcerned with the potential threat of VR games outselling Cyberpunk.

However, that kind of rhetoric may change when the PSVR integrates with the PS5. According to Sony, select PS4 and PSVR games will benefit from faster and smoother frame rates from the PS5's hardware. The post doesn't mention which games will be getting PS5 optimization, nor does it say that there will be graphical updates to the games as is happening on the Xbox.

The post does go on to say that you won't need to buy any extra equipment to use the VR rig on the PS5. All you'll need is your PS4 camera and a camera adapter. There is a note attached to the camera adapter requirement that says there is no purchase necessary, you'll only need to claim one when they are available. Details on how to do that will be shared at a later date on the PlayStation website.

As it stands, Sony is relying heavily on its portfolio of exclusive games. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch of the imagination to envision a similar push in the VR department. Although we've heard it time and time again, VR gaming could very well replace console gaming in the future. Admittedly, we are a long way off from that occurrence, but Sony may be playing the long game here by giving VR developers a home.
