Double Fine has announced that Psychonauts 2 has gone gold, as well as discussing the possibility of a physical release.

The news comes from Double Fine's Twitter page, where it shared an image of a censor next to Psychonauts 2's cover art saying that the game has gone gold, which essentially means that development is complete and the game is ready for shipping before its release date later in August.

When announcing the news, Double Fine said, "It's been a long time coming, but Psychonauts 2 has officially gone GOLD. Enjoy the adventure on August 25th on Xbox and play it Day One with [Xbox Game Pass]".

Psychonauts 2 originally started development at the tail end of 2015, when it started life as a Fig crowdfunding project. It's been a long wait since then, with Double Fine giving regular updates on the game's progress and showing the development process through behind-the-scenes videos. In the middle of that development cycle, Double Fine was also purchased by Microsoft, allowing Psychonauts 2 to add boss battles back in, and giving it more time for development overall.

After announcing that Psychonauts 2 has gone gold, Double Fine was also questioned about the possibility of a physical release of the game. Certain Fig backers were able to secure a physical copy back when the project was crowdfunded, but fans have been asking about a general physical release for some time.

When asked, Double Fine said, "Not for launch. Physical copies are being produced for our Fig backers but will not be available for wider retail."

It later clarified, "There may be paths towards something post-launch but I also can't make a promise on that either. We're definitely aware of the interest!".

Double Fine has previously talked about the possibility of a physical release for Psychonauts 2 in a Fig update to backers. It essentially said the same thing that it was aware of the interest and was looking into post-launch options, although nothing has been confirmed just yet.
