PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, better known as PUBGwill be getting cross-platform play sometime in early October. PUBG will be available for cross-platform play between the Xbox One and PS4. This news comes after the reveal that the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will also feature cross-platform play.

PUBG was first introduced to the world in 2017 on PC, before being released on the Xbox One. In 2018 it was ported to the PlayStation 4 and free-to-play mobile versions were also made available. Since its release, PUBG has become one of the best selling video games of all time with over 50 million total sales. PUBG has achieved what many games can only dream of and is looking to expand its appeal with the introduction of cross-platform play.

Cross-platform play between different consoles seemed like a pipe-dream not too long. While a good amount of games feature cross-platform play between consoles and PCs, such as Xbox One to PC play and PS4 to PC play, Xbox and PlayStation cross-play isn't as prevalent. Including PUBG, there are only five games featuring cross-platform play between the two consoles. These include Fortnite, Dauntless, Rocket League, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and now PUBG.

Fortnite was a game changer when it introduced its full cross-platform features and set the bar for what games, and consoles, should do. PUBG is hoping to continue building on its legacy as one of the best selling video games of all time with this new introduction to cross-platform play. They are hoping to deepen the player pool and add an extra layer of appeal to the game. When more people are able to access it and play with their friends on different consoles, games have an even higher potential to build their player base.

PUBG wasn't required to support cross-platform play. It didn't need the capabilities to save the game itself. Cross-platform is just another added benefit to PUBG and one that will hopefully allow the game to reach an even wider audience. If the integration into cross-platform play for PUBG is successful and beneficial to all involved, it will hopefully continue to open the door for other games to have this feature as well.
