Microsoft may have lost Halo Infinite as an Xbox Series X launch title, but Sega just offered it the best possible replacement. Out of the blue, the Japanese publisher has announced that Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will be releasing this holiday season for both current and next-generation platforms. Heading to PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Series X on December 8 (with a PC/Steam release to follow in early 2021), Christmas just got a whole lot brighter.

Retailing for $39.99, the price may seem a little steep, but Sega is giving players ample reason to buy early. Both the PS4 and Xbox One versions will be eligible for free upgrades to their next-gen counterparts regardless of whether you buy it physically or digitally. I don't really know what you could do to Puyo Puyo Tetris other than offering native 4K support, but the gesture is very much appreciated.

Along with a new story mode -which is always surprisingly deep in Puyo Puyo games-, this sequel will include a "Skill Battle" mode that introduces character-specific skills and item cards. This will give players the chance to customize their puzzle-style and add some variety to the mix. The other modes from the first crossover will also be making a return (which includes Versus, Fusion, Swap, Party, and Big Bang).

Sega also has a slew of DLC planned for the future, so Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 won't be a one and done deal. Again, I'm not sure what else could possibly be added here, but you have to admire the model. Sega clearly loves this wacky puzzle title and I don't blame the company. The first was excellent and possibly the best version of both Puyo Puyo and Tetris available.

I honestly never expected anything else to come from this series, especially not so soon. I'm a little bummed that the PC version is being held back a bit, but this should give Sega some time to work out the online mode. In the first iteration, online was a bit laggy and dominated by people that were way too invested in Puyo Puyo. Providing some kind of matchmaking system would be ideal so that I don't get immediately crushed after starting a match.
