In the first of a slew of planned free updates for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Sega's iconic Sonic the Hedgehog will be joining the roster as a playable character to drop blocks and pop puyos. While the blue blur is clearly the biggest addition here, this DLC patch will also come packed with some additional characters, new songs, and a few additional game modes.

The new game mode is what Sega refers to as "Boss Raid." In this, you'll work together with friends to take down a larger foe, ala the recently released Tetris Effect Connected. You'll be able to battle this boss to the tune of four new songs, which include the legendary Sonic theme song. As well as that, Puyo Puyo characters Lidelle, Ms. Accord, and The Ocean Prince will be selectable.

If all of that wasn't enough, this latest update will bring 20 new avatars that you'll be able to customize your player profile with. If that's not enough Puyo Puyo Tetris goodness for you, Sega reassures that this is the first in a line of free updates to come. We'll likely continue to see other Sonic characters added to the game, though I wouldn't expect substantial additions in terms of story content.

That's perfectly fine, too. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a bit of a rehash of what came before, but it offers the same vast amount of content as its predecessor. Available on basically every system, you also have a ton of choices when it comes to playing the game. I've yet to hear anything about how it runs on PS5 and Series X, but I'm sure that 4K goodness is quite special.
