Rainbow Six Siege is going south of the border as Mexico will host tournaments for the popular tactical FPS in 2020. Tournaments are to include both professional and amateur players with qualifying play already underway ahead of playoffs in January. These recent developments are just the tip of the iceberg as Mexico hopes to serve as a launching pad for the rest of Latin America in regards to Siege.

With Mediapro LVP handling the initial seedings and overall bracket, teams are currently in stage play after last month’s qualifiers. Out of this will come two squads who will face off against the best that Latin America has to offer in the February finals, and both Ubisoft and LVP are making arraignments for the showdown over the next few months. Eventually the competition should reach out to other countries in the same format, but for now, Mexico will host the structured format before presumably heading to Brazil or other potential hot spots for the tournament.

Alvaro Irurita of Ubisoft mentioned that the opportunity to work with LVP has been fruitful, but is clearly looking ahead at the big picture. “We hope to continue expanding the alliance (with LVP) to the rest of the Spanish-speaking countries to provide the professional and amateur gaming community, as well as fans of esports in Latin America, with the very best experience.”

As Ubisoft continues to face a tough year thanks to the disastrous launch of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and delaying almost all of their upcoming major titles to next year and beyond, Siege remains popular as a premier esports FPS. Expanding the game into Latin America is a sound move, particularly as the game continues to make money while they try and get their affairs in order.

In the meantime, this move further Siege's status as an evergreen shooter in the genre, much along the lines of the forever-popular CounterStrike. With over 50 million people playing the game today, Ubisoft’s push to further the game’s lifespan and expand into Latin America could push that number up even higher and keep the game as the center of its strategy until next year.
