Insomniac's beloved platforming franchise Ratchet & Clank is returning on the PlayStation 5 in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Ratchet and his best buddy Clank are set for an interdimensional adventure on the next-gen console that will introduce new mechanics, weapons, and characters to the series that, according to Insomniac, could never have been done before in any previous console generation.

A trailer for the game premiered during the PS5 Reveal livestream today and came as a surprise to fans of the series. The last entry in the series, Ratchet & Clank (2016) was essentially a remake of the original Ratchet & Clank and a tie-in to the feature film adaptation of the same name. It was the only Ratchet & Clank game on the PS4 and there has been no indication that the series would ever continue. With the overwhelming success of Marvel's Spider-Man and the Insomniac's commitment to continue the Spider-Man series, it seemed like they had left Ratchet behind.

Lo and behold, the lombax and his robo-buddy will be making a return on the PS5. During the presentation, Insomniac gave a brief explanation of the way Ratchet will be able to move between worlds and dimensions almost seamlessly thanks to the power of next-gen hardware. He will also have a brand new arsenal full of unique and interesting weapons, as has become a staple of the series.

Perhaps most interestingly, the trailer ends with Ratchet and Clank becoming separated on either side of a dimensional rift. As Clank collects himself and call out to Ratchet, he is approached by a Lombax that looks astonishingly like a girl version of Ratchet.

Wielding a hammer rather than a wrench, this "other Lombax" is apparently an alternate dimension version of Ratchet. We don't get a look at an alternate reality Clank (Clankette?) but that could be because he (she?) is in "our" dimension with Ratchet.

The title Rift Apart could be interpreted as either ripped apart or drift apart and foreshadows Ratchet and Clank's separate adventures. Will they be reunited in the end, or will they end up going their separate ways?

No release date has been announced yet for Ratchet & Clank: Drift Apart, but with Spider-Man: Miles Morales coming as a launch title, expect Drift Apart exclusively on the PS5 sometimes in 2021.
