Rift Apart dominated the sales chart during its launch month while breaking all sorts of records in the Ratchet & Clank series along the way.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart ended a five-year wait for a new game in the series. It also took the PS5 to a whole new level just seven months on from the console's release. Insomniac made the decision not to create Rift Apart for PS4, instead harnessing everything the PS5 has to offer to create a truly next-gen game.

As the numbers surrounding Rift Apart's launch continue to pour in, the decision to skip the PS4 appears smarter and smarter. According to The NPD Group, Rift Apart was the best-selling game in June. While it wasn't exactly a packed month for big releases, it did comfortably beat rival titles such as Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade and Mario Golf: Super Rush.

Perhaps most impressive of all is Rift Apart's numbers when compared to previous Ratchet & Clank titles. Not only did it enjoy the biggest month in the series' history, but it also doubled the previous record which was set by the 2016 version of Ratchet & Clank on PS4. In other Rift Apart sales news, it returned to the top of the physical charts this week.

Elsewhere in The NPD Group's numbers for June, Xbox has reason to celebrate. In terms of dollar sales, the Series X|S was June's best-selling console. However, the Nintendo Switch led the way once again in terms of units sold. Pretty impressive considering it has been on the market more than four times longer than its rivals, and a good sign that it will hit 100 million units sold before you know it.

If the PS5 and the Series X|S were readily available, then June's numbers would make for very different reading. The shortages continue though, and there really is no telling when they will come to an end. Despite the PS5 having to settle for third place last month, and its continued lack of availability, PlayStation has still managed to sell more than 9 million of them so far.
