It was recently revealed that a Ready Player Two movie is currently in development, just one month after the release of the novel.

Ready Player Two author Ernest Cline revealed the news in an interview with Inverse. According to Cline, the sequel to Ready Player One is currently in the early stages of production, although a proper schedule is difficult to trace due to the fact that Hollywood is in limbo right now due to the pandemic. Aside from stating that he thinks the cast enjoyed shooting the first film, nothing else was mentioned about the cast or crew. Cline didn't even confirm whether or not Steven Spielberg will be returning to the director's chair.

This should be taken with a pinch of salt for now. It's worth remembering that it took Warner Bros. a whopping eight years to release the first film after acquiring the rights to Cline's novel all the way back in 2010.

Warner Bros. has been in hot water recently due to its decision to make all of its 2021 lineup available day one on the HBO Max streaming service. This will include the highly anticipated Dune, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and Godzilla vs. Kong. Legendary Pictures has been quite aggravated by this decision from Warner Bros., and has demanded $250 million in compensation. For HBO Max subscribers, however, this is a huge win - for example, you can now watch Wonder Woman 1984 on your PS5 with this service.

Ready Player One will also be arriving on HBO Max in January. If you haven't seen it, it includes famous video game characters such as Overwatch's Tracer, Duke Nukem, and StarCraft's Jim Raynor, as well as a host of other Easter eggs. According to Box Office Mojo, the film was a major success worldwide, having earned almost $583 million in theatres.

While we know that production has started on Ready Player Two, an official release date has yet to be revealed.
