It seems like Animal Crossing: New Horizons is more true-to-life than we realize. A Twitter user noticed that liquids were prohibited on planes in the game, and in the real world, this ban was instated in 2006 after the uncovering of a terrorist plot. The ban within the game implies that something similar (or even the same event) happened in the game as well.

The 9/11 attacks, as well as a number of other attempts in the following years, caused a heightened level of security in airports and on airplanes. The ban on liquids in carry-on luggage on all flights happened in 2006, after the Transatlantic Aircraft Plot was discovered. Terrorists had planned to detonate liquid explosives, carried on board airliners travelling from the United Kingdom to the United States and Canada, disguised as soft drinks. Initially, all liquids other than baby food were completely banned, but the measures were relaxed in the following weeks.

The sticker with a crossed out bottle at the in-game airport implies that there is a need for a similar ban in Animal Crossing, casting the game in a much darker light than we're used to seeing. But if this possibility is too grim for you, there's another: one Twitter user points out that the ban is actually only on aerosol bottles, as those would automatically burst during takeoff due to the air pressure difference.

Since Animal Crossing is definitely a feel-good game in which we can escape from the darkness of the real world, we're opting to believe that the ban is just a matter of pressure and not something more sinister.
