Herbs are constantly popping up in Red Dead Online, and apart from being necessary for all sorts of crafting, they can also be sold for cash, and in the long term, net you some gold as well.
Unlike most items you find through looting enemies or lying about in abandoned properties, regular herbs are not bought by most merchants in the game. Instead, herbs are only purchased by doctors, and this applies to all 43 collectable plants and herbs found throughout the map, with the sole exception of orchids.
Where To Sell Regular Herbs
The two main places to sell these regular herbs are:
- In Valentine to Ben Calloway
- In Saint Deni, to Joseph R. Barnes
A notable exception to this rule applies to American Wild Flowers, which fall under the category of collectible items. These can and should instead be sold to Madam Nazar as part of the Collector Role, though you do need to have first purchased the role as it is a premium part of Red Dead Online.
The good news is that herbs never expire or wilt in your bags, so an efficient strategy is to collect as many sets of American Wild Flowers as you can and then sell the lot all at once during a promotional bonus RDO$ event, which changes each week between the in-game roles.
Having a few collector sets ready to sell to Madam Nazar is a quick way to rake in the cash in Red Dead Online, so consider doing it as well for other sets of playing cards, combs, and more.
Herbalist Challenges
Apart from the cash you can get from selling both types of herbs, there are also awards associated with Herbalist challenges. Since there are challenges associated with virtually all actions in Red Dead Online, totalling 653 total, being asked to become a green-thumbed Herbalist should come as no surprise. If you are a completionist and always looking for ways to immerse yourself in the rustic scenary, this means that you will be tasked with picking, and sometimes eating, a wide range of herbs, berries, and more.
Finally, there is the chance to earn from premium Red Dead Online currency as well. Selling 100 herbs total will award you a new belt buckle to add to your collection, and will also allow for the challenge to reset, awarding you five gold nuggets. Like many other repeatable awards, you can do this several times before becoming locked out, so be sure to keep at it to maximize your rewards.
