Quick Links

With so much to do in Red Dead Redemption 2, it can be easy to lose track of the smaller details, like the pocket watch. However, it is something that every player should check out at least once, as it is one of the best ways to immerse one’s character in the world without using the in-game menu. While this might seem like a flavorful detail, there is actually a real benefit to having the watch ready to go.

First, players won't have to pause the game and navigate the menus to tell the time. Also, though hitting the D-Pad will give you the time, it won't say exactly how long until the next minute. A nice clock on your person gives you the benefit of knowing exactly when that next minute arrives, perfect for waiting for animal spawns and shops to open or close. Here's how you can get the most out of your pocket watch.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Choosing To Use A Silver Pocket Watch

The practice of whipping out a pocket watch might make the characters feel older than they actually are, but remember that these watches were once newer contraptions.

Open up your satchel, go to the "kit" menu, and select a watch. If you already have a watch equipped, you'll get a chance to choose between watches at this time.

Select your favorite with a checkmark.

Exit the menus and maneuver to the far-right slot. This is the "kit" area, most often used for binoculars. From there, scroll through the inventory of items with the LT/RT or L2/R2 triggers until you reach the option to select a pocket watch.

Releasing M1 or L1 will then select the chosen pocket watch, and entering first-person mode will provide an up-close view of the time.

Selection Of Watches

Red Dead Redemption 2 Using A Gold Pocket Watch To Tell The Time

Some of the following pocket watches are easy to come across, while others require an objective to be completed in order to obtain:

  • Pocket Watch
  • Platinum Pocket Watch
  • Gold Pocket Watch
  • Silver Pocket Watch
  • Antique Pocket Watch
  • Reutlinger Pocket Watch

Pocket watches, along with goods labeled as stolen, can be sold for some quick cash by visiting a fence. These individuals can be interacted with in the same way as any normal shopkeeper, but all items that have been stolen can be selected for sale. Just make sure not to sell any watch that you like using when unloading illicit items.

Pocket watches will not replace a trinket or talisman. There are some great options for trinkets and it would be a shame to lose those benefits, but this is one cosmetic choice that does not actually replace anything because it is kept inside the character's clothing.

Other Customization Options

Players always have the option to look at the time in RDR2's in-game menu, but for those who want immersion, this is a far better option. One of the best story-driven games of all time is unsurprisingly better when gamers dive into the role of the cowboy, so the developers have provided ample amounts of character customization.

Pocket watches are but one way to really get into character, but clothing is another. For this, players can craft animal gear using the highest quality pelts, reinforced equipment for those who want to pack more firepower while on the move, and a host of special items that at first might seem out of place, but certainly make the character more unique.

Some of the strangest items from this category are the pirate sword and tricorn hat, or the mining helmet and bone knife. A Viking helmet, hatchet, and comb are other options, and there is much more to create a customized character.
