How many times have you said “You’re a good boy” while petting your horse in Red Dead Redemption 2 and wished you could do the same with the dogs in the game? Well, your wish can finally be fulfilled with this latest mod.

Dog Companion is a mod that allows you to keep a dog as a pet as you wander the Wild West. The mod allows you to “Bond” with any canine you come across in the game; once you do so, it will accompany you wherever you go on the map.

Since your pet dog is the goodest boy or girl, they will wait patiently outside any establishment you enter. You can call them via a whistle, but just like your horse, they may not hear you if you’re outside the whistling range. However, you don’t have to be worried about losing them; a prompt on your horse menu will summon them back.

It’s not just fun and games; your dog will assist you in melee fights and can even be commanded to attack other animals and NPCs. If you’re out hunting and can’t find the deer you just shot, worry not, your dog will run to the spot and bark.

It seems the configuration settings and some of the behaviour for the dog have been taken from those of your horse. It gets agitated when predators are nearby and has a similar health core system, which has to be kept up by feeding them. You can also change their name or dismiss them anytime.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, but the modder has not mentioned if your dog can be killed. But if it has a health core, and since it’s modeled on the horse’s behaviour, you should probably ensure that it stays away from scenarios that are a bit too dangerous.

However, the mod still needs a few adjustments. It seems that the pet dogs attack any NPC that’s angry or agitated, regardless of you giving the order. This has resulted in them attacking NPCs who’ve been hogtied or antagonized by the player. One comment even mentions the dog attacking the homeless vet after the player gave him a dollar.
