A very brief fanmade clip of what a modern-day Superman game might look like has got us hoping someone more official is working on the real thing.
Superhero culture has taken over the movie and TV world and is well on its way to doing the same thing to video games. Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales are two of the best games to come out of the Insomniac studio in the past decade. While the same can't be said of Marvel's Avengers, and not just because it wasn't created by Insomniac, it's still a sign that there's a very real hunger for big money superhero games.
It's also a market DC has capitalized on and will continue to do over the course of the next year or so. First via Gotham Knights, and then through Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. The latter features an evil version of Superman, arguably the world's most recognizable hero. His appearance combined with the fanmade demo below has got many hoping DC's leading man will get his own game someday soon.
The demo was created by Reddit user TJATOMICA using Unreal Engine 5. Even though it is incredibly brief, it has been more than enough to whet the appetites of those who have seen it. The clip shows Superman taking off and flying over what appears to be New York City.
It has been so long since the last standalone Superman game that the clip has been enough to generate quite a bit of a buzz. The last true Superman game was Superman Returns. A tie-in game to the movie released in 2006 which is probably best left in the past. It was the last in a long line of largely disappointing Superman games. No studio has managed to get it right and has relied on adding Kal-El to other games like Injustice where he has a supporting cast.
There is an outside chance that a Superman game that will look like the clip above is already in the works at Rocksteady. Since a mind-controlled Superman is making an appearance as a villain in Kill The Justice League, it stands to reason that once he's fixed, Superman will stick around and maybe get his own spinoff. Rocksteady previously had plans to add Superman's evil doppelganger Bizarro to its universe, but those plans were ultimately scrapped.
