MMOs are a great way to get your gaming in, get your socializing in, and find a community online. While the world of MMOs is varied and vast, ranging from fantasy roleplaying games to games where you hit soccer balls with cars, there's something for everyone out there. Yet somehow, starting an MMO feels eerily similar each time, and there are habits we all have when booting up a new exciting game.

They could be to our detriment, or to our advantage, but when it comes down to it, we are creatures of routine, and we're going to do what we're gonna do. These entries explore the things we all tend to do when starting a new MMO, and hopefully unite us in the sweet naïveté that involves a new major multiplayer online game (roleplaying or not), especially with little to no experience.

5 Spend Hours Scrutinizing Over Character

It happens to all of us. We start the game, play the tutorial, and then spend hours staring at the character customization screen. We spend mindless time thinking over the benefits of each class, and race. And that's all before the cosmetics. We flick between Nose Option 2, then 4, then, 2, and so on. What would the benefits be of long hair over short? Maybe your character's eyes are a little too close together (wait, maybe not).

This isn't just for games with character customization either. Even with battle royales and other types of MMOs — there is still the trouble of finding what character you like, what playstyle best fits you, and the infinite combination of teammates and other players. Either way, you're going to spend a lot of time sitting in front of that screen going back and forth between the smallest details.

4 Grind, Grind, And Grind Some More

Whether someone told you to "get good," or you just genuinely like the game, grinding is something we all do when delving into a new MMO. Whether it's in-game or literal experience, when you start a new MMO you are seeking it out like a moth to the flame. This is the phase where you really get to familiarize yourself with the game, the playstyles, and the mechanics. You learn how to get levels as quickly as possible, as effectively as possible, which definitely is not the easiest thing to do.

But hey, you're committed, and you want to be like the players you see online who are clearly experts. Sometimes it's killing low-level enemies over and over (and over and over), and sometimes it's playing match after match. We're all looking to get our skills up one way or another. This can definitely be the most frustrating part of starting, or your favorite depending on who you are.

3 Beg Your Friends To Play With You

Let's be real - the best part of any MMO is the online aspect; the ability to play with thousands to millions of strangers. The only problem is that strangers are strangers, and you can't chat with them like you can with your buddies. While you can always make friends online (and that can be one of the best parts), sometimes you can be a bit shy, and making friends is hard. In the end it's always fun to share your interests and hobbies with your friends.

However, they don't always come so easily. Maybe they're not interested, or maybe they don't want to spend the money, so sometimes you really have to sweeten the deal. You will definitely help them get levels quickly, and you will for sure give them as much in-game currency as possible. Whatever it takes, you will get them to play, and share in the love of the game.

When you're hooked, you're hooked. And when you start a great new MMO, you're most likely going to be at least mildly obsessed with the game you're playing. Your next goal? Immersion. You want to play this game all the time, and think about it when you're not playing it. You find your favorite new Twitch streamers and YouTubers, join a guild, and eat, sleep, and breathe the game.

The best part of this step is finding out so much you didn't know about the game. You may be addicted, but there is probably someone out there who has dedicated a large part of their life to the game, and is happy to share all the little secrets and nuances they've learned.

1 Become Strongly Opinionated

Alrighty, you've been playing for a while, and let's be real; you're pretty much an expert on the game. Or, at least you think so. We all get a little ahead of ourselves, but when you love something it's easy to think you're an expert. It's even fun too. The world of MMOs is one of strong opinions. Everyone has their own views on what the developers should do, what abilities need to be nerfed, and what characters need more focus.

As you grow with the game, you will be sure to find things that really excite you, as well as ones that don't thrill you. Like, at all. Part of the initiation into any community, in particular MMOs, is finding what you are passionate about in regard to the games, its community, and its mechanics. You will eventually take to Reddit, Twitter, and other game forums to express your very righteous opinions, and find others to have (hopefully) healthy and fun debates with.
