Capcom has officially announced Resident Evil 4 is being remade for the PS5. Sony's State of Play presentation began with a surprise reveal of the long-rumored remake with cinematic-style graphics and an even darker atmosphere than the original.

Resident Evil 4 Remake has been rumored to be in development for some time. The most recent report from last February noted Capcom was making several changes for Resident Evil 4, including the darker atmosphere represented in the trailer. Leon Kennedy has also been redesigned somewhat, while the Las Plagas villagers are even more menacing.

Resident Evil 4's two DLC expansions, Assignment Ada and Seperate Ways, are also said to be merged into core campaign for a more streamlined experience.

Today's presentation also had two more surprises in store for Resident Evil fans. First, trailer only mentioned the PlayStation 5, implying that it will be a current-gen only game. Second is the release date, which is set for March 23, 2023.

In addition to Resdient Evil 4 being remade, Sony also revealed a VR version for the remake is being developed for the PSVR2. No other details on that project were disclosed, but given the success of the original PSVR remake, it's likely to become the next big VR hit.
