Few games are as timeless as Resident Evil 4, but the Remake turned everything up a notch. It has great quality-of-life improvements, graphical enhancements, and a change of clothing for the main characters. There are plenty of gameplay changes too, the knife in particular is a show-stopper.

As with all popular games on PC, the modding community has ideas to enhance an already well-made game. The best mods for the Resident Evil 4 remake retain the charm of the original while providing you with meaningful gameplay or graphical changes. Alternatively, they just change enemies to Shrek, which is an essential tradition.

10 Simple FOV - See Better

Simple FOV By Blackholesun01

As the name implies, this mod is a simple FOV (Field of View) changer for the Remake. Resident Evil 4 Remake has the classic over-the-shoulder view which is great to create tension as you cannot see much behind Leon, but this can also be frustrating. The Simple FOV changing mod lets you view more of the surroundings while keeping gameplay the same.

The mod doesn’t affect cutscenes, item pickup, or any other gameplay element. It’s an elegant solution if you find the default close-to-the-back camera a little claustrophobic. The mod also makes any Ganados attacking from behind easier to see.

9 Max Stack Sizes – An Inventory Space Solution

Max Stack Sizes by LordGregory

Resident Evil games always have a mini inventory management game inside. So much so that some say the series is about handling your briefcase with a zombie backdrop. So if you are tired of micromanaging inventory space and deciding on what to take on the adventure and what to leave, this mod is for you.

The mod increases the maximum stack sizes of items. So you can hoard everything without the worry of running out of inventory space. Want to have 999 grenades to spam during every fight? You can with the Max Stack Sizes mod. The mod even makes non-stackable three-herb combos stackable, you’ll need to do that manually though but hey, it’s progress.

8 Classic RE4 Leon – Nostalgic

Classic RE4 Leon by Crazy Potato

The new Leon is a good-looking guy, but he isn’t the guy from the original. The Classic RE4 Leon brings back the classic look of the beloved zombie-slaying character. The slight emo-style hairdo is back as well, so you can enjoy how his hair sways when fighting off monsters. The brown iconic jacket also makes a comeback to tie up the look.

If you love the 2005 Leon more, this mod is made for you. The jacket quality is also top-notch, and the overall model doesn’t seem out of place in the remake either. The mod creator did a fine job on the details.

7 More Visible Bear Traps – Easy Avoidance

More Visible BearTraps by BonusJZ

There are a surprisingly large number of bear traps scattered around the game. Some of them are cleverly camouflaged too, so you only see them when Leon has his leg stuck in one. While the traps are a deliberate gameplay design choice, making them hard to see might make you feel cheated. Sometimes the traps don’t seem fair at all.

This mod makes all bear traps easy to see and thus avoid. The traps come in three variants; red, silver, and gold. Pick the one that seems more visible to you and avoid getting caught in one again.

6 Manual Flashlight – Optional Light

Manual Flashlight by KeelHauled

The Manual Flashlight mod for Resident Evil 4 Remake is a simple toggle that allows you to control the flashlight. Sometimes you don’t need the flashlight, and sometimes you do. This mod takes control away from the game and hands it to you. The mod is currently only available on the keyboard as it needs to bind to a key.

It’s a simple solution if you dislike the automatic flashlight control in the game. Press the X key, and you can turn on the light, press it again to turn it off. You can also change the default key to anything you like by editing the first line of the script.

5 No Yellow Paint – Better Immersion

No Yellow Paint by BonusJZ

The remake applies yellow paint to most interactable items including breakable boxes. This makes it easier for you to spot them and get the loot inside. However, it’s immersion-breaking and deviates from the original game that didn’t have so much yellow paint in it.

The mod removes all yellow paint indicators from the game and restores it to the original 2005 form. Now you’ll need to check each object to see if it breaks or not. It’s understandable from a gameplay perspective but takes you out of the game. So No Yellow Paint is the way to go, especially if you start a new playthrough.

4 Health Bars – How Healthy Are They?

Health Bars by GreenComfyTea

Want to know how much health a Ganado has? This mod puts a health bar over each enemy, so you know how much damage you need to dish. Does it break immersion? Yes, it does. Is it convenient? Also yes. So if you are among those who value convenience over immersion, this mod is made for you.

The mod also lets you know which weapon is dealing the best damage. You don’t want to waste high-powered weaponry on a zombie (Ganado) that’s super close to dying. It’s a great way to optimize your build and load out.

3 Deadly Headshots – One Shot One Kill

Deadly Headshots by alteredbeast

Deadly Headshots make the headshots insta-kill, just like in George Romero’s flicks. One shot to the head is all it takes to down a Ganado in the game with this simple mod. If you are tired of somewhat bullet-spongy enemies in the Remake, this is the mod that’ll cure your problems.

This also makes the game a lot faster-paced than intended by the developers. Get this mod and become Leon Wick. The pistol becomes deadlier and one of the best weapons in the game. You’ll still need to nail the headshots though, which is easier said than done.

2 Overpowered Charms – Break the Game

Overpowered Charms by JpDeathBlade

One mod to rule them all, by them, we mean Ganados. This mod breaks the game in more than one way. It increases the charm effects to incredible values, so you get everything extra. From faster running speed to ridiculously fast health recovery from green herbs, you get everything in this mod.

The mod also increases drop rates for ammo, gunpowder, resources, Pesetas, and herbs. Sell anything to the new merchant, and you’ll \also get a great resale value. This is a straight-up power fantasy mod that lets you mow through the game with ease.

1 Shrek – Get Out of His Swamp

Shrek by Iven

This ingenious mod replaces Salvador with Shrek and makes the game at least two times better. Some parts don’t fit well and are rough around the edges, then again so is Shrek. Get this mod if you love Shrek in your games or dislike Salvador a lot. It’s not perfect as some elements don’t work during cutscenes, but it’s a price every Shrek fan is willing to pay.

The mod doesn't bring any audio changes to the character, hopefully, the developer will add them down the line. Salvador saying iconic Shrek lines would make for a fun time. Maybe Ashley can be Fiona, but that's just wishful thinking.
