Capcom has announced that its smash-hit game Resident Evil 7 will soon be getting a VR prequel. Dubbed Resident Evil 7: Walkthrough The Fear, this prologue is scheduled to premiere on October 26 at The Plaza Capcom Ikebukuro VR-X Booth in Tokyo, Japan. As this post might imply, this VR experience will be a Japan-exclusive event for tourists to partake in. Capcom didn't give any indication that it would be bringing this prequel to the west.

As for how Walkthrough The Fear will play, the publisher notes that a single playthrough of the experience will last around 40 minutes. Between two and four players will team up and be challenged with surviving a return to the Baker Family Estate (which is the main setting of Resident Evil 7 proper).

Taking some trappings from battle royale games, players will be scrounging for supplies as they explore the mansion looking for an escape. Being a prequel, family patriarch Jack Baker will likely make an appearance and hunt players across several different rooms. Whether or not this prequel will explain how the Baker's obtained their weird powers, the family will certainly be making an appearance.

Considering the equipment needed to run this prequel, I'm not so sure Capcom will be releasing it in the west. VR hasn't taken off in gaming like many publishers would have hoped and even Resident Evil 7's inclusion of PlayStation VR didn't send sales for Sony's device skyrocketing. With many people not wanting to invest in the technology, there's a very real chance that this latest installment in the Resident Evil series will remain in Japan.

There could be a possibility of the title getting a limited run in a Dave and Busters restaurant, though. Nintendo currently has Luigi's Mansion Arcade at select locations, despite it being over two years old. Sega even released a new House of the Dead game last year that is playable across the nation. This won't be convenient for everybody, but I wouldn't give up hope just yet that Walkthrough The Fear won't make some surprise appearance overseas.
