It seems that Jill won't be the only sandwich wandering Raccoon City in Resident Evil 3, as Capcom has released the first profile for one of the playable heroes in Resident Evil ResistanceMartin Sandwich.

Resident Evil Resistance started out as Project Resistance, before being formally renamed and repackaged as part of Resident Evil 3 in Sony's recent State of Play event. The game puts four players in the role of survivors trapped in Raccoon City during the zombie outbreak, while another player takes on the role of a Mastermind, who is an Umbrella operative with the power to set traps and control monsters. The survivors each have access to unique skills that will allow them to deal with the undead threat and overcome the harsh environment, in order to escape from Raccoon City before it's destroyed.

The official Resident Evil Twitter page has detailed one of the playable survivors in Resident Evil Resistance. The first character to be revealed is an engineer named Martin Sandwich, who has the power to create traps that can slow or stun enemies. By far the most interesting thing about Martin Sandwich is his name, as it's almost certainly a reference to the Jill sandwich line from the original Resident Evil.

In the original English localization of the first Resident Evil game, there is a scene where Barry Burton saves Jill Valentine from being crushed by a trap. Once Jill is safe, Barry remarks that she was almost a "Jill sandwich" This line took on memetic status, to the point where it has even been referenced in other Resident Evil games, including a scene in Resident Evil Revelations 2 where Claire is almost crushed and tells the same joke, causing Barry's daughter to complain about him always repeating that story.

The fact that Martin Sandwich is appearing in a game that is connected to Resident Evil 3 means that his name is likely not a coincidence, especially as Resident Evil 3 is very much Jill's story and the series loves referencing the Jill sandwich scene. We can only hope that many a Mastermind manages to crush Martin in the same manner as his namesake.
