Capcom has confirmed Resident Evil Village is a single-player experience. However, anyone who purchases the game will gain access to Resident Evil Re:Verse – a unique multiplayer experience that revisits popular locations throughout the series.

The announcement was made during Capcom's Resident Evil Showcase. Fans had long speculated that Village would include some form of multiplayer, and those theories turned out to be somewhat correct. While Re:Verse isn't technically part of Resident Evil Village, it'll give you a way to experience some new, Resident Evil-flavored multiplayer.

Re:Verse "features striking comic-style visuals and sets popular Resident Evil characters against each other in four to six-player deathmatch battles in iconic Resident Evil locations."

Capcom continued, "Players can choose from a fan-favorite roster, each with their own unique skillsets to master. When players are defeated in combat, their character respawns by mutating into a bioweapon to enact revenge on their foes."

More information on the game will be shared in the coming months, but it's definitely not what most people had in mind when they conjured up a new Resident Evil multiplayer mode. It sounds interesting enough, though, and we're curious to see how Capcom pulls it off. The comic-style visuals are a striking departure from Resident Evil Village, but seem to offer a nice reprieve from the cold, gloomy landscape around Castle Dimitrescu.

Pre-orders for Resident Evil Village are now available, offering the usual suite of Standard, Deluxe, and Collector's editions. They all come with free access to Re:Verse, although the statue of Chris Redfield in the Collector's edition is pretty enticing. Regardless of your choice, however, you'll be treated to both Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil Re:Verse.

Resident Evil Village is scheduled to release on May 7 for PC, current-gen, and last-gen consoles – minus Nintendo Switch. It's the eighth major installment in the Resident Evil franchise and takes place after the tumultuous events of Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. Re:Verse, meanwhile, seems to be a wild mashup of iconic characters and locales across the series' long-running history.

Expect to hear more about Resident Evil Re:Verse in the coming months.
