Resident Evil Village is being made with PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in mind. However, that doesn't rule out a release on PS4 and Xbox One. During a Tokyo Game Show stream, Capcom said it is working on releasing the game for current-gen platforms, but "no promises".

Elsewhere in the stream - as the poor translator was struggling to keep up with the barrage of information - the developer revealed a new snippet of information: Resident Evil Village will allow more freedom than past games. Capcom said it wants players to find their own solutions to problems, and to experiment. Whether this means for combat, puzzles, or both is unclear.

Resident Evil Village takes place several years after Resident Evil 7. We play as Ethan Winters once again, as he's ripped from a peaceful life with his wife by former series protagonist Chris Redfield. Presumably, he's the one who drops Ethan in the titular village, which isn't a very nice thing to do. Especially when there are werewolves about. Bad, Chris.

The new enemy types aren't mindless zombies - they're fast and coordinated, and they hunt Ethan down in packs. Outside of the enemies, the village also features residents (eh? eh?) who you can interact with. Capcom said it wants to flesh Ethan out as a character, as opposed to the blank slate he was in the last game. Hopefully, he's a more exciting character than his name suggests. Nobody wants to be an Ethan.

Resident Evil Village also features a storybook, as seen in the last trailer embedded above. This acts as a progress diary and allows you to track the threads of the story in one place. The developer also overhauled the lighting between RE7 and Village, to give the more open environment a foreboding atmosphere.

Resident Evil Village releases in 2021 for PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. And maybe it'll come out on PS4 and Xbox One as well, but who knows?
