A lot can be said in a video game title, no matter how short the title may be. Some may be fairly straightforward, which brings to mind the likes of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Meanwhile, others like Dark Souls and Shadow of the Colossus have a bit more meaning to digest. In the latter camp can be found Resident Evil.

"Resident Evil" can have multiple meanings. The first simply refers to the idea of a "residence" being "evil." The first Resident Evil title takes place in a residence called Spencer Mansion. There, many evil creatures can be found lurking about, including the undead, heart-stopping zombie dogs, and a number of mutated animals that entail sharks, spiders, and frogs. There is a ton of "evil" to be found in this "residence."

Or, the term "resident" might refer to its definition of a subject who has the main authority in some institution. In this, the said institution might be Spencer Mansion, where tons of nefarious experiments have been conducted. Undoubtedly, much of what goes on in Spencer Mansion is evil given all that the game's heroes have to contend with throughout the game.

A third, more simplistic explanation for the name "Resident Evil" might just be that the title sounded cool. Released in the late 90s, following the likes of Evil Dead and countless other cheesy horror movies, Resident Evil took on many tropes of the horror genre. This included the jumpscare trope, zombies, and a variety of plot devices. Therefore, the term "Resident Evil" may have been a name chosen out of a hat that managed to evoke much of what was expected from the horror genre.

It is worth noting that, elsewhere, Resident Evil was called Biohazard. Throughout the games, many peripheral characters are implied to have mishandled a lab experiment, causing plans to go awry. Thus, Biohazard is a bit more cut and dry.

Resident Evil could mean a number of things, but the first game seems most illustrative given the game's setting. Or, perhaps it sounded horror-y enough to be chosen as the title of one of gaming's most popular horror series.
