Neill Blomkamp, the director of movies such as District 9 and Elysium, has been approached by fans on Twitter about the possibility of a new skin for popular Apex Legends character Pathfinder. The skin in question is based on his own 2015 sci fi film, Chappie.

Blomkamp’s Chappie is about a robot with an advanced artificial intelligence who starts out child-like and innocent, before eventually going off on a bit of a murderous rampage. Pathfinder is also a highly intelligent robot, and is prone to shooting and killing his fellow champions. Considering the similarities between the two robots, what with their similar demeanors and aesthetic designs, a Chappie inspired skin for Pathfinder actually seems to make a lot of sense.

It’s not known at this time whether Neill Blomkamp has actually played Apex Legends, but it’s also not like Blomkamp is a stranger to video games involving guns and giant robots. He recently directed a short film/trailer for the other newly released EA game Anthem. So he has dipped enough of a toe into the waters of EA video games that perhaps his acknowledgement of the fan suggested skin would give it some weight. He even took to twitter himself to bring the idea to the public.

Now granted, Chappie wasn’t a smash at the box office, nor was it a hit with critics. However it has developed a bit of a cult following, a following big enough apparently for people to approach the film’s director about a skin for a game he has nothing to do with. Much to the delight of fans of Chappie though, Respawn CEO Vince Zampella seems to be in agreement. At least if his own Twitter is anything to go by:

While it’s no way a confirmation that a skin for Pathfinder is on the way, if the CEO of the company is on board then it seems highly likely this skin may come into existence. Plus, considering the incredible and sudden popularity of Apex Legends, it’s only a matter of time before they start doling out special skins for all of their characters. Respawn also recently unveiled their road map for the game, revealing that new characters, seasons and a battle pass are on the way. Special skins such as one based on Blomkamp’s own murderous robot could very well be one of the special items available on that battle pass.

With Zampella seemingly approving this skin suggested by both fans of the movie and Blomkamp himself, perhaps other directors could similarly suggest their own skins. Could Michael Bay suggest a Bad Boys skin, or David Fincher suggest a Fight Club inspired skin? Everyone is getting on board with Apex Legends as it grows more and more popular with each passing week. It’s only a matter of time before Hollywood comes calling, for some of that sweet battle royale exposure.
