Returnal's Ascension update will add campaign co-op and survival on March 22.

Ever since Returnal's release last year, there have been several rumours that Housemarque was working on some kind of update or DLC to it, something that was spurred on by a vague Twitter post by the studio. Although this seemed unlikely after Housemarque confirmed that it was working on a new IP just a few weeks ago, the rumours were true - Returnal is getting new content through the Ascension update.

The update was announced through the most recent PlayStation State of Play and was shown off through a brand-new trailer. The trailer featured Selene narrating about her continued journey through Atropos, before showing another version of herself joining her in combat, confirming that the new update is adding co-op.

The trailer also showed off the Tower of Sisyphus, a new survival mode that lets the player traverse up through a tower of increasingly difficult challenges. The trailer description warns that you'll need the Icarain Grapnel to be able to access it, though..

The description for the trailer describes the update as, "Join Selene, still trapped in an endless cycle – but this time, no longer alone. Returnal: Ascension adds Co-op Mode, allowing you to share your entire journey through the shifting labyrinth of Atropos with another player. This update also adds The Tower of Sisyphus – accessible as long as you’ve unlocked the Icarian Grapnel. It’s an ascending gauntlet of increasingly dangerous phases, with each containing twenty floors. Upon entry, eliminate all the enemies on each floor and secure your passage to the next one up. Just be ready for what you might encounter within".

Although campaign co-op sounds like a big part of the update, the description for the trailer also wants players that, "The Tower of Sisyphus, House sequences and Challenge Mode are not available in Co-op Mode", so it seems like most of the new content added through Ascension won't be playable in co-op. Players also won't be able to access the first-person house sequences.
