Every time you die in Returnal, you'll wake up back at the crashed Helios ship. It might be instinct to just jump straight back into another run, but it is worth taking the time to stop and explore the ship from time to time as there are some secrets to be discovered.

This guide will cover everything you need to know about the crashed ship in Returnal.

Inside the crashed ship, you will find some computer terminals that you can interact with. One of them can be used to initiate a daily challenge.

This will task you with clearing a single biome, whilst challenge modifiers are set to make the experience more difficult. These modifiers could be a variety of changes, such as being unable to regain health, or hostiles dealing more damage. You will also be given a certain weapon to use throughout the challenge.

In one of the rooms on the ship, there is a bed where you can sleep. This usually triggers a short story cutscene, which will slowly reveal more about Selene's backstory. These dreams will also show you more about the Astronaut that watches Selene throughout Returnal.

However, if you can look past these creepy cutscenes, resting in bed has a very positive benefit. You will regain health each time you sleep, so if you ever need to heal, just teleport back to the ship while you still can.

Most doors in the crashed ship are unlocked, as indicated by a blue light on the doors. However, there is one door that is locked throughout Returnal.

  • To unlock the door to the Cargo Bay, you need to beat every boss and complete the game.

There are five bosses that you must defeat, split across six biomes. The Overgrown Ruins, Crimson Wastes, and Derelict Citadel are all grouped together as Act 1.  This is followed by Act 2 which consists of the Echoing Ruins, Fractured Wastes, and Abyssal Scar.

Once you have cleared both acts and defeated all five bosses, you can enter the cargo bay. Inside, you'll find a device that allows you to change the timeline between Act 1 and Act 2. This allows you to go back and experience the first three biomes after beating Returnal, so you can test out any new gadgets in the original areas.
