While the main focus of Returnal is its combat, there are still some story aspects of the game that will slowly reveal how Selene got to the rogue planet. Apart from scarce cutscenes that trigger after defeating certain bosses, Selene's house will be your main place to know more about the story.

You've probably seen this house if you've played the game for a couple of hours. It can be found in a special room that has a Translocator in it as well. You can only find the haunted house in the Overgrown Ruins and Echoing Ruins biomes, and they're the first and fourth biome respectively.

First House Sequence Guide

Returnal Entering The First House Sequence

There are a total of six house sequences in Returnal, and you need to complete some objectives to unlock them. To enter the first house sequence, you'll have to find the House Key in the Overgrown Ruins biome. There are two ways to find this key:

  • You can either enter a specific room that has one Xenoglyph and the key is shown with a blue aura at the end of the giant room.
  • Or you can defeat the Phrike boss in this area, and you'll get the key when you get to the house in a subsequent run.

When you have the key, you can use the Translocator nearby to get to the house area and enter it for the first time. Go through the first sequence to unlock the Astronaut Figurine artifact at the end. This artifact allows you to get a second life whenever you're defeated, and it resurrects you at the same place where you lose all your health.

During each sequence of the house, you'll find a brown cube with black eyes on it. You have to pick up this cube if you want to get the artifact after the sequence ends. If you miss it in a certain sequence, you can't do it again.

Though you can still unlock the respective artifact by finding it randomly or getting it from Cthonos.

Second House Sequence Guide

Returnal Astronaut Knocking On House Door

Once you've finished the house sequence for the first time, it'll be locked and you won't be able to enter it in your subsequent runs. To unlock the second sequence, you have to defeat Phrike and enter the Crimson Wastes biome once. After doing that, you'll be able to enter the house again when you find it in subsequent runs.

If you get the House Key after defeating Phrike, you'll only be able to do the first sequence in that run. To get the second sequence, you have to start another run and find the house again.

Apart from the general structure, the house will see some changes. Here's everything you need to do in this sequence:

  • Interact with the phone and the pill on the table to your right as you enter first.
  • Go upstairs and interact with the laptop in the far room, you can read what it says.
  • Go downstairs and interact with the door that has the astronaut knocking from outside.
  • Head back upstairs and interact with the stuffed toy on the couch in the room.
  • Pick up the eye cube between the bed and the side table.
  • Finally, interact with the letter on the table where you found the laptop before.

Once you finish this sequence, you'll find the Music Box artifact where you spawn back in Overgrown Ruins. This artifact will play a sound when you're near a secret, which is great for beginners. The house will lock away once again until you finish another objective.

Third House Sequence Guide

Returnal Selene Playing The Piano

You'll find the Ixion boss when you reach the mountain in the Crimson Wastes biome and ascend it twice. The third house sequence will unlock after you defeat this boss and enter the Derelict Citadel biome. You'll be able to enter the house in Overgrown Ruins when you find it again, and here's what you have to do:

  • Follow the hallway to the right of the stairs and interact with the book on the table.
  • Enter the room right beside the main door and play the Piano.
  • Interact with the weird gooey television beside the Piano.
  • Enter the main hallway again and interact with the table phone.
  • Get back into the television room and sit on the sofa.
  • After the television cutscene, pick up the eye cube in front of it.
  • Head outside and find the astronaut in the hallway beside the stairs.
  • It will disappear when you get close. Turn left and follow the path down to finish the sequence.

You'll get the Spaceship Model artifact in Overgrown Ruins after you leave the house, and you can start fulfilling the objective for the fourth sequence. This artifact gives a special power to your dash, and you'll damage the enemies that you dash through.

Fourth House Sequence Guide

Returnal Kid With Playstation Controller

To unlock the fourth house sequence, you essentially have to reach the Echoing Ruins biome. You can do this by defeating Nemesis in Derelict Citadel and going through the big cutscene. This sequence introduces a new character, and here's what you'll need to do:

  • Interact with the items in the room and then head out the door.
  • Go downstairs and enter through the door to your left.
  • You can interact with the radio and then sit in front of the astronaut.
  • Narrate a story to the astronaut by choosing different options.
  • Go back out the door you entered and listen to the table phone.
  • Go to the room where you found the laptop in the third sequence and interact with Octo to finish up.

You won't need to find an eye cube in this sequence since it's a new character, and you'll get the Two-Way Radio artifact when you get back into Echoing Ruins. This item increases your protection based on the Ether in possession.

Fifth House Sequence Guide

Returnal Octo Under Dinner Table

You've probably realized the requirements now, and you have to defeat Hyperion to enter Fractured Wastes and unlock this sequence. Here's what you have to do:

  • Interact with the book at the end of the hallway downstairs once again.
  • Enter the room with the television and play the music device.
  • Pick up the eye cube near the piano.
  • Go to the astronaut at the end of the hallway beside the stairs and you'll switch perspectives.
  • Interact with the items in the room and head out once again.
  • Enter the door that's emitting light downstairs and find Octo near the dinner table.
  • Interact with the television in the room with a piano.
  • Look through the telescope near the window.

Claim the Child's Watch artifact when you respawn in Echoing Ruins. This artifact has the same effect as the Astronaut Figurine.

Sixth House Sequence Guide

Returnal Wheelchair In House

This is where things get tough since the objective required to get the sixth sequence isn't easy. First, you have to finish the game by beating the Ophion boss in Abyssal Scar and going through the hole formed by the boss. When you're back at the airship, you have to go to every single biome and find a Sunface fragment.

When you've finished the sixth sequence, you'll get the Car Keys that can be used at the car in the area after you defeat the Ophion boss. This will lead you to the secret ending of Returnal.

You will find these fragments at random places across these biomes, and most of them will use the white globe that unlocks hidden platforms. Here's a tip for finding these shards in each biome:

Overgrown Ruins

Found inside an optional door marked by a blue triangle. As soon as you enter the correct room, you'll see the white sphere leading you to the fragment.

Crimson Wastes

Also found inside a blue triangle door, and you can differentiate the correct room since it has the effect that removes your dash and red toxic water.

Derelict Citadel

Cross the main bridge that you opened during the main walkthrough, and you'll find the fragment on the other side.

Echoing Ruins

Found inside an optional room where the dash is disabled once again. The room has a platform extending into the red toxic water with one laser mechanism in the middle.

Fractured Wastes

You'll find the white sphere to reveal hidden platforms inside the room with the red door.

Abyssal Scar

This will be in the first few rooms. Try to find a chest that is on an open platform after two jumps. When you get to the chest, a further path with a white sphere will be revealed.

Once you get all the fragments, find the house for the last time and enter it. To finish this sequence, you simply have to enter the room to the left when you go past the hallway beside the stairs. Before you head downstairs, make sure you go upstairs and claim the eye cube. This will give you the Melted Globe. This artifact increases your chance of salvage based on the keys you have.
