MultiVersus is having exceptional success as a free-to-play fighter, allowing players to fight with a selection of Warner Bros. characters but locking others behind a paywall. When it releases, Project L will follow a similar monetization scheme as Riot confirms the League of Legends fighting game will be free to play.

In today’s development update, Project L game director Tom Cannon told us how Riot plans to make money from Project L, joining the ranks of MultiVersus, Smash Versus, and Brawlhala as a free-to-play fighter.

"We want you to be able to play no matter where you live, what your skill level is, or how much money you have to spend on a game," said Cannon. "To that, I'm happy to confirm that Project L will be free-to-play. When it comes to monetization, we promise to be respectful of both your time and your wallet."

Cannon also gave us an update on Project L's development, saying that things are moving along, but not going so far as to even hint at a release date.

"We’re finishing up our work on core mechanics now, and a lot of the team has moved on to building champions or building around game features like competitive play and our social systems,” reported Cannon while footage of the game played in the background. Much of it was the same footage featuring Ekko and Darius that we saw last November, but we also got to see a bit of Jinx and Ahri in development too.

And there's a fifth character heading to Project L's starting roster. Illaoi, the Prophet of the Great Kraken, will wield a giant golden idol that can rip spirits from the bodies of her foes to feed to her ancient god. She's been a staple top-laner in League of Legends for seven years, and she seems no less imposing in her move to Project L.

Described as a "big body juggernaut," Illaoi's kit will feature massive, powerful blows courtesy of her gold statue. She'll also be a midfield powerhouse thanks to ghostly tentacles that can be summoned on successful hits or blocks, creating huge combo potential. Riot said that they're being careful to keep Illaoi from becoming a zoner with these tentacles by having them compliment her physical prowess rather than defining a mystical moveset.
