Riot Games has been busy recently. Between new League of Legends champions with complex mechanics, an online card game, and a new TV show, the world of Runeterra is certainly expanding a great deal. Now it is growing even further, as Riot Games has announced a “publishing group” called Riot Forge that currently has multiple game titles in development.

The idea behind Riot Forge is that Riot Games will work with partners to make games using Riot IP. Other game studios plan to make games in the world of Runeterra, the universe of League of Legends, in conjunction with Riot, who retains rights to the universe. This is in addition to the current projects that Riot Games is developing internally; League of Legends isn’t going anywhere.

Riot says that there are multiple game titles in development, and there are screenshots available to give a quick peek into the worlds that are being created. The different pictures appear to show the docks of the piratical port of Bilgewater, the shining city of Piltover, the icy tundra of the Frejlord, and the deep undercity of Zaun.

From the screenshots alone, which show no characters or gameplay, it is hard to tell what the games will be like. Riot Forge has not yet announced the names of any of its partners, so the developers of these games are unknown as well. One hint that they did give was that the games Riot Forge will be publishing will be “completable.” This is not elaborated on, but it seems that the new games will have a beginning, middle, and end as opposed to repeatable match-based multiplayer games like League of Legends.

This is Riot’s first venture into publishing, and is following a trend in the gaming industry. Many large game companies, even those with strong internal development teams, are branching out into publishing in addition to other projects. Hopefully these new games will expand the world of Runeterra and give players more of the characters and settings they know and love from League of Legends. Riot Forge is definitely something to watch out for in the coming year.
