During a Livestream event to celebrate the 10th anniversary for League of Legends, developer Riot Games announced a few new projects it has been working on. One of those was Project A, a character-based, competitive, tactical FPS for PC. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Overwatch, this brand new shooter will feature a cast of characters that each have unique abilities and equipment.

In an announcement video, executive producer Anna Donlon said, "Just like League, we're in this for years and years to come. With Project A, we're staying true to the high consequence gameplay of tactical shooters. But we want to evolve the space. We want a tactical shooter with more creativity, more expression, and a lot more style."

To that end, Donlon explained how Riot has been working with a crew of veteran game developers to perfect its latest take on the genre. She specifically notes how things like low server tick rates will be addressed and that dedicated servers will be a part of Project A's network setup. "With Project A, we're going big on things like global infrastructure and net code designed to go to war on peekers advantage," Donlon states.

Another area of extreme importance to Riot is anti-cheat measures. A famous problem for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Riot is focusing on making sure any cheaters are punished with minimal delay. The company promises anti-cheat technology will be implemented from day one and that further enhancing this feature will be at the "forefront of our development."

The company didn't have much else to share about the title. No release window was given and Donlon finished her presentation by stating, "We're going heads down for a while, but expect to hear more from us in 2020." That likely means Project A won't be seeing a beta this year and is probably targeting a release for next spring or summer.

I'm not sure if the world needs yet another hero shooter, but Ubisoft has seen immense success with Rainbow Six Siege. The tactical shooter genre has been dormant for a long time and could do with some new blood in the ring. Hopefully, Riot can nail this one to give Ubisoft actual competition.
