VALORANT developers have teased the possibility of a new deathmatch mode alongside announcing Spike Rush, a game mode best described as VALORANT’s usual bomb defense turned up to 100.

VALORANT’s beta players have been vocal about wanting an official deathmatch mode to be added to the game. While it’s not yet officially in the works, the developers have made a note of the player base’s interest and stated that they’re looking into implementing a deathmatch mode at some point in the future. Because VALORANT isn't tailored to support the immediate introduction of deathmatch style gameplay, developers will need to take some time to lay the groundwork for this game mode. As such, players will likely be waiting a good long while before deathmatch comes to VALORANT.

However, the developers have acknowledged that they expect VALORANT’s mode ecosystem to evolve. This means Spike Rush and any future game modes introduced to VALORANT have a chance to either be permanent fixtures of the game, part of a rotating set of modes, or playable for a limited period of time. Given that the mode is still in beta, which category Spike Rush will fall into will be decided at a later date.

Unlike usual VALORANT matches, Spike Rush is significantly shorter, with games of no more than seven rounds. Teams swap between Attack and Defense every three rounds, and a single Spike Rush game should last about eight to 15 minutes. Rather than planting and protecting one Spike, every attacking member has their own Spike, and to add to the chaos, both teams will be using the same randomized weapon. That’s not all: scattered around the map will be powerup orbs which offer bonuses such as weapon upgrades, damage buffs, and even teamwide debuffs for the opposing side. To say there's a lot going on in Spike Rush is an understatement.

As the game mode is still in beta, players can expect to see many changes over the next few months in response to bug fixes and player feedback. At this time, additional powerup orbs and a few other changes are planned to be introduced.
