Rob Liefeld, the creator of the sassiest mercenary around, Deadpool, is no longer a producer on Deadpool 3.

Liefeld’s Merc with a Mouth debuted in February of 1991. Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, is best known for his habit of breaking the fourth wall, talking trash, and growing back severed body parts. Since Ryan Reynolds donned the red hood and katanas back in 2016 for the first time in Deadpool, revamping the character after his semi-introduction in the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the character has been a smash hit.

Liefeld’s character’s cinematic has hit a bit of snag, with the creator declaring that Marvel Studios has nothing slated for a third installment. Liefeld made a lot of waves when he made that statement, as it gave the impression that Deadpool was dead in the water; the word at this point is that more Deadpool is not in Marvel’s five-year plan. Despite this development Liefeld still has plenty to say on how any future Deadpool films should be handled. He believes that giving Ryan Reynolds creative control in the skin tight red suit is the key to creating more great movies. Either way, Liefeld has declared that he is not worried, as he has been cashing in on the character since the early ‘90s.

In a post-Endgame world Marvel has released news for several new movies, including Shang-Chi and Black Widow, which fit the standard upbeat Marvel profile. But with Venom: Let there be Carnage, Blade, and Morbius on their way as well, we could be seeing a turning point into something darker for the studio. Even without Liefeld attached to the Deadpool movie franchise, fans will hold out hope for more Wade Wilson. He’s got the power of time travel now, so honestly, who’s to say what’s possible?
