If you're a big fan of knocking balls into nets with fast cars then you're probably aware that Rocket League is about to switch to a free-to-play business model. It's yet another big move for Psyonix's blockbuster game ranking up there with being purchased by Epic and then almost immediately removing paid lootboxes.

To commemorate this occasion, Psyonix has revealed its plans for the next season of Rocket League. It's set to launch the same day that the change to free-to-play happens and will bring all kinds of new cosmetic goodies.

Despite the game currently being on its 14th season, the newest season will be called Season 1. It's being seen as a fresh start for the ball-bumping title to go along with its new home on the Epic Games Store and free price tag.

There'll a new Rocket Pass to complete along with rewards for participating in tournaments and the competitive season. By going through the pass you'll unlock the Harbinger car along with other goofy bonuses like a lunchbox to stick on top of your vehicle or decorative wheels that look like sliced kiwis. As with most games that have a pass system, there's a free tier and a premium tier that costs around $10.

In addition, Rocket Pass challenges are getting their own special hub. You'll be able to access a Challenges Menu where your Weekly and Seasonal Challenges will be listed. That way you'll be able to keep track of what you need to do to rank up and get those sweet cosmetics.

Psyonix is also changing how it launches its seasons. From now on, the Rocket Pass will launch at the same time as the new competitive season and competitive tournaments. They'll all now have a consistent beginning and end date to help everything stay more organized.

Along with the revamped tournaments and the upcoming Llama Rama crossover event with Fortnite, there are big things in store for Rocket League. But it's important to note that if you're planning to jump into the game for the first time on PC, you'll only be able to download it from the Epic Games Store. It's soon to be delisted on Steam due to Epic purchasing Psyonix and the Rocket League property. That may suck for anyone opposed to Epic's habit of snatching up exclusives, but at least console players will not need Playstation Plus or Switch Online to play the game (although it will still require Xbox Live Gold for some reason. Come on Microsoft.)

You won't have to wait too much longer to get the game for the low, low price of nothing. The launch of Season 1 and the switch to free-to-play go down on September 23. So get ready for a whole new era of car-soccer.
