Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song is a very open-ended game. Many of the quests you can take on don't seem to have that much plot relevance, and you are only funneled towards a 'main quest' of sorts at the end of the game. Something that could help you in your quest is knowing what and where each Fatestone is.

Fatestones are pieces of equipment with good stats, but also very useful in altering the difficulty of the final boss of the game - who we won't spoil just now. Not gathering the Fatestones will lead to a much harder fight than if you had!

Each Fatestone gives you a boost to all your stats, but also strengthens spells from a particular school of magic, while protecting you from another. The table below details only these statistics, while the one below it will detail how to get each one.

Fatestone

How To Acquire

Amethyst

If your main character is Barbara: Go to the pub in Weston and talk to the Minstrel. He will give you this Fatestone.

If your main character is not Barbara: Simply recruit Barbara - she will come with the Amethyst equipped.

Aquamarine

Go to Crystal Lake (which is unlocked by talking to an NPC in Crystal City). Avoid the guard boats in this area and explore until you find a cave to enter - specifically Cave D. Carry on until Cave E and keep going, avoiding the harmful smoke. Use the blue light at the end to progress - this final area is where you'll find the Aquamarine, protected by a boss.

Beware that if you talk to Prince Neidhart with the Aquamarine in your possession, he will take it in exchange for a reward.

Black Diamond

Complete Stolen Nymphs and then, at Event Rank 17, find Marina. She appears at port towns. Accept her quest and make your way through the Water Temple - there are a few tricky battles to take on but you'll reach the Black Diamond eventually. There is a boss battle when you leave the temple against a cultist.

Diamond

Complete An Unlucky Woman first by talking to Schiele at multiple different pubs across the world. She will appear in a new pub every few times you raise your Event Rank. Eventually, talking to her will trigger a cutscene and a fight - after this, you'll have to fight a very powerful boss in the Temple of Schirach, which is located in the tunnels beneath Estamir.

Emerald

Once you have reached Event Rank 9, go to the Temple of Elore in Melvir. Talk to the priestess there to get the Isle of Evil quest - you can only get it if you've already completed the Ailing Emperor quest. Follow the steps of this quest by talking to the man at the docks, working your way through the Isle of Evil, and beating the boss here. If you're too high in Event Rank, you won't be able to get the Emerald from the boss, so do this sooner rather than later.

Moonstone

Once you have reached Event Rank 9, go to the Temple of Elore in Melvir. Talk to the priestess there to get the Ailing Emperor quest. After learning about the curse placed on the emperor, head to the Melvir Library - this is found on the second level of Melvir. At the end of this room, one of the bookshelves has a book about Fatestones and tells you that the Moonstone is in Twinmoon Temple, which is on Walon Isle. You need two medallions to enter:

To get the medallions, you need to complete Free the Gecklings (started in Oapu by talking to the men in the pub) and then Ancient Texts. At the Geckling cave, talk to the Gecklings until you learn about an Ancient Text - if you're playing as Hawke, you can pay 10,000 gold right there and then, if you're not playing as Hawke, you'll have to find and recruit him to get the Ancient Text - he's found in Uso. Once you have the text, decipher it in the Melvir Library and then get the medallions by going to the Temple of Amut in North Estamir and then by going to the deepest part of the Mazewood to meet Eres.

With both medallions, go to the Jungle on Walon Island and take the Geckling's offer to send you deeper. Take the rightmost cave in this location and get through the cave to reach Twinmoon Temple. Before you can get inside, there is a very difficult cultist boss to face - he is extremely difficult to take down at lower Event Ranks. Once he's dealt with, go into the temple and make your way through it, facing an (easier) boss at the end. You'll get the Moonstone here.

Obsidian Sword

Firstly, you will either need to revive a dead character through meeting Death on the evil path, or reach Event Rank 22. This will unlock the Frozen Lake Faerie quest, involving traveling to Merholm. This quest unlocks Frosthold Fortress in Shiverland.

In Frosthold Fortress, do not recruit the Red Mage here and make your way through the fortress. On 1F, defeat Frielei to get the Obsidian Sword and a chance to recruit her.

Opal

Complete Free the Gecklings in Oapu and talk to the chief to learn about Silver's Treasure. Go to the Jungle on the island and use one of the caves that doesn't lead to Twinmoon Temple to reach Silver's Cave. You should have Find Traps and Disarm Traps equipped before going ahead - dispel the illusory wall to get to the depths of Silver's Cave and then, in the rooms filled with chests, disarm all the traps and move onwards. Defeat the boss in the final room to get the Opal.

Ruby

Once you reach Event Rank 18, talk to the lord of Eugenstadt. If you have completed Pride of Knights and Constance Kidnapped, started in the same room at earlier Event Ranks, you'll get the Theodore's Madness quest. Talk to Constance on the second floor of the manor to get a key - use it in Mirsaburg to unlock the locked door in the alley. On the third floor, enter Theodore's room and read the papers here to unlock the Pagan Ruins.

Make your way through the Pagan Ruins and defeat the boss, the Red Dragon. Once it is defeated, you'll have to identify the correct Theodore - look at the direction the statue is facing!

Go to Weiserheim and talk to the fake Theodore there to start another boss fight. Talk to Flammar afterward to get the Ruby.

Topaz

Get to Event Rank 7 and start the Missing Taralians quest by going to the Taralian Camp through the Steppes of Galess with Aisha in your party. If your main character is Aisha, you can do this quest before Event Rank 7.

Go to the Kaklim Desert and find a sandstream - let it carry you to the Desert Ruins, which you should enter. Explore this area until you're able to descend down to some fights and then the Nisa Cavern. Keep descending and you'll fight another boss, and then reach Merholm. In the Temple of Nisa here, pray at the altar and then you can take the Topaz.
