Calin Mateias got so mad at rival World Of Warcraft players that he attacked the game’s servers, and now he’s facing prison time for it.

Back in 2010, Mateias, who went by Dr Mengele in-game (named after a Nazi scientist who experimented on prisoners) allegedly got into several arguments over raid loot with other players. Rather than hash it out via chat like most WoW players, Mateias decided that the people he bore a grudge against just shouldn’t be allowed to play the game.

To hinder his enemies, he ran several DDoS attacks on the game’s severs so that they couldn’t log in. Of course, as BBC reports, that also made it so thousands of other players couldn’t log in either. The attacks went on for about seven months, from February to September.

Fast-forward to 2018, and the 38-year-old Mateias is now in Los Angeles facing prosecution for his actions. He is a Romanian citizen, which means he was actually extradited to face charges over something he did in a video game. Mateias pleaded guilty to the charge of causing damage to a protected computer, for which he will serve one year in prison and owe $29,987 to Blizzard to make up for the costs of his attack.

Perhaps the most amusing bit of the story is hearing the very technical way the Department Of Justice frames the events. When explaining the concept of raids and loot, the press release had this to say, "Mateias, using his in-game avatar, often participated in collaborative events, such as 'raids' where players joined forces to meet game objectives and were rewarded with virtual proceeds or in-game advantages.”

The prosecution for the case also words Mateias’ motivation as a "’juvenile desire’ to beat his rivals.” That’s understating it a bit.

After that, it proceeds like a fairly open-and-shut case. Mateias has faced charges for taking part in an operation that sought to hack a computer vender named Ingram Micro that’s also based in California. With all that going against him, there probably wasn’t much his defense could do. He probably wishes he could hearth back to Romania right about now.
