Krafton was rumored to have been developing PUBG 2 earlier this year, but plans for a battle royale sequel have apparently been canceled. That’s according to PlayerIGN, the same PUBG insider that broke the story of a sequel back in January.

In an interview with The Loadout, PlayerIGN said that PUBG 2 was internally called Project Re:BORN, but the game ran into development issues that led to its cancellation. “My source tells me PUBG Project RE:BORN was originally meant to be the PUBG 2 game we were expecting, but the development team bumped into issues and are opting to go with an engine update/overhaul to the current game instead – a bit like Overwatch 2.”

Parts of what will come in the Taega update, such as the new weapons, a Gulag-style respawn system, and a self-revive was originally intended to be in PUBG 2, but instead are being added to the original PUBG as part of a long string of updates, according to The Loadout.

PlayerIGN also found evidence for a brand new battle royale game coming from Krafton's recent IPO statement. This game is called Project Titan and is believed to be a spiritual successor to PUBG that ties into The Callisto Protocol, the new narrative horror game coming from Striking Distance Studio.

“Project Titan is the code name for an unannounced project,” Krafton told The Loadout in a statement. “No additional information is currently available.”

Project Titan will also be developed by Striking Distance and takes place in the same PUBG universe, but at the same time as The Callisto Protocol. PlayerIGN speculates that the game will revolve around a battle royale deathmatch between prisoners sent to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.

PUBG's lore is being further fleshed out ahead of the planned release of Callisto Protocol with a new video series hosted by Jonathan Frakes. It's a spoof on the old Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction? TV series which Frakes also hosted, but explores the fictional origins of PUBG's battle royale games. It's worth a watch if you're a fan of the game and have 17 minutes to kill.
