It seems that every conference under the sun is being cancelled due to the coronavirus. Large gatherings of people in confined spaces isn't an ideal place to be right now, making it an easy decision to shutdown any expos that were supposed to take place. However, due to the nature of Nintendo Directs — that is, they're broadcast remotely around the world — it looks like the company is going full-steam ahead with not just one, but two Directs this month.
Yesterday there was a bit of a leak by UK retailer, GAME, in which it inadvertently stated that the LEGO x Super Mario collaboration was announced during a Nintendo Direct. Oddly enough, there wasn't a Nintendo Direct — the partnership was announced on social media. It's possible that this was just a mix-up by GAME, and the reference was quickly removed and corrected. But could this have been pointing to a future Direct where more info about the LEGO product is revealed?
That's only the first bit of speculation. The more credible information comes from VentureBeat staff writer, Jeff Grubb, who recently wrote that the Nintendo Indie World broadcast would probably take place on March 18, followed by another Nintendo Direct on March 26 — according to his anonymous sources.
As for what will be shown, Grubb doesn't give specifics but that we should expect to see a "broader look at the Nintendo Switch's upcoming lineup." Let's hope that's true, because after this month Nintendo fans don't have much to look forward to. The company is also expected to show off a bunch of third-party games that will be coming to the system.
Whether or not these rumblings are true remains to be seen, but we don't have to wait much longer to find out. If the first Direct is really scheduled for March 18, then we should start getting more info within the next couple of days. It makes sense, too, as Nintendo needs to start building hype for any games scheduled to come out in the later half of the year. Once Animal Crossing: New Horizons releases on March 20, the number of big titles hitting the market is — as of now — disappointing. Let's hope a Nintendo Direct can fix that.
