RuneScape developer Jagex is working on a brand new open-world game, potentially coming to both PC and console. The survival title will be set in the RuneScape universe and is set to be revealed "soon", as the company continues to expand its offerings in 2022.

Jagex has started hiring for the untitled survival game, and has already managed to nab two devs from Ubisoft and another who has worked on Sony titles. Jagex says this is part of its plan to help RuneScape reach "new audiences", and comes just after the MMO's twentieth anniversary.

While Jagex is remaining tight-lipped until the official reveal, we can glean some information from its recent job listings (thanks, NME). The listings refer to the announced game as an "exciting new IP, built in Unreal Engine 5". This suggests that, unlike what fans were hoping for, the game will not be RuneScape 4.

Jagex also says that this open-world survival game is being made as part of the company's "aim to grow [RuneScape] into new audiences on desktop and console platforms." It isn't confirmed what these platforms will be, but that leaves the possibility of a RuneScape-esque game coming to PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch for the first time ever. It's likely that the new hires from Ubisoft tie into these console market hopes.

We don't know when the "soon-to-be-revealed" game will actually be revealed, but with many companies opting to host their big premieres in the summer, it might not be far off at all. In the meantime, Jagex will continue to support new releases via its third-party publishing arm, Jagex Partners.
