Players will encounter several biomes when exploring the world of Rust. Each map will contain just under a dozen biomes that contain a variety of flora, fauna, and valuable resources for the player to collect and hunt for.

It’s important the player makes a point of exploring each of the different biomes as they all have something valuable to offer. But there are some biomes that are worth spending a little more time in than others. From the Temperate Forests to the Rocky Beach, here are all the biomes in the game and what they have of value.

10 Rocky Beach

Rust Rocky Beach

The Rocky Beach is similar to the Temperate and Desert Beaches but packed to the brim with rocks. The rocks can range from small ones the player can pick up to massive boulders. This biome commonly features cliffs, overhangs, and other rocky structures.

The main resource is obviously rocks, the base component of many weapons and used for gathering supplies. Wolves can be found in abundance here along with Boar and Fish can be found in the ocean. If the player is looking to hunt Wolves in particular or gather mass amounts of rocks it’s a great biome, otherwise it’s best to avoid this one.

9 Arctic

Rust Arctic

The Arctic is one of the more hostile environments in the game. It’s cold, barren, and teaming with large predators. Perhaps the main benefit is that few players will spend a lot of time here making it a choice location for veteran solo players to survive.

The Arctic biome is perhaps the best source of metal thanks to the abundance of Metal Ore Nodes in the area. Wolves and Bears can be hunted for various supplies and the occasional Horse will make an appearance. If the player is looking for massive amounts of metal this is the place.

8 Arctic Beach

Rust Arctic Beach

The Arctic Beach is a little more hospitable than the Arctic. It features collectible rocks on the beach and has a surprising amount of mushrooms that can be collected. Some players opt to build their base on the beach when exploring the Arctic for this reason.

Just like the Arctic the player can find Wolves and Bears. The ocean has Fish which can make for a safer source of animal fat. The main perk to this biome is the floating Junk Piles that seem more common on these beaches.

7 Desert

Rust Desert

The Desert isn’t as bad as the Arctic, but not nearly as accommodating as the Temperate biomes. It’s rather barren in terms of plants and trees. It also has hot days and cold nights giving players both extremes to try and survive in.

But for resources, it’s a great place. The Desert is teaming with Rad Towns, Barrels, and Loot Boxes. Bears are rare here, Wolves, and Boar are more commonly found. This is the best biome for finding Horses. If the player has some good weapons and wants to go hunting for loot and wildlife it’s a good place to be.

6 Desert Beach

Rust Desert Beach

The Desert Beach makes the Desert a bit more hospitable for survival. Palm trees can be found on the coast along with Driftwood and small rocks. Combine this with the presence of Fish and it’s not a bad biome to make a living in.

In terms of resources, it’s slim pickings. Aside from the Wood, Rocks, and Fish players can hunt Wolves and Boar. In fact, this is where players can find the most Boar. Unless the player needs a lot of Cooked Pork this biome is more of a staging point to visit the lucrative Desert.

5 Lake

Rust Lake

The Lake biome is most commonly found within Temperate biomes, though lakes can appear anywhere. They’re distinct from the biomes they’re in due to the common presence of Domes.

In addition to the goodies found inside Domes the Lake also boasts a large amount of Fish. Boar, Wolves, and Bears will sometimes visit this location as well. It’s a hospitable place and is a great biome for loot assuming a Dome is in the area.

4 Temperate Beach

Rust Temperate Beach

Out of all the Beaches the Temperate Beach is the easiest to live in. There are usually quite a few trees. It also boasts the most mushrooms out of any biome. Fish are also a bit more common in the ocean here compared to other oceans.

It does attract Boar, Wolves, and Bears which can make surviving here tricky. But if the player is wanting Fish and Mushrooms this is the best biome for it.

3 Temperate Forest

Rust Temperate Forest

The Temperate Forest is a great place to build a base in in due to the abundance of trees. In fact, this biome will have the most trees of any other biome without exception. It also hosts the most diverse range of wildlife.

Chickens, Boar, Deer, Wolves, Bear, and Horses can all be found here. It’s a great place to go hunting and to gather large supplies of wood. The presence of Wolves and Bear can be a bit of a problem, but with the right gear or a good base to fall back to it’s a nice biome with a lot of useful resources.

2 Temperate Grassland Hills

Rust Grassland Hills

The Temperate Grassland Hills is one of the safest places in the game to go hunting for Nodes. It’s perhaps the best place to find stone Nodes. The hills can also be great for hiding from other players and conversely setting up ambushes.

The Hills do have a fair amount of wildlife. Deer, Boar, Wolves, Bears, and Horses can all be found here. Hunting Horses and Deer can be a pain as they can traverse the Hills easier than the player can. But it’s a good spot for ambushing Bears.

1 Temperate Grassland Plains

Rust Grassland Plains

The most hospitable biome in the entire game is the Temperate Grassland Plains. It’s a mild climate and very flat which is great for base building. It’s also the most likely to have other players given how easy it is to live in. For some players, this is a deal-breaker and for others, it's an abundant supply of resources.

In terms of less macabre resources, there are lots of Hemp Plants and small Rocks. The player can also encounter Chickens, Boar, Deer, Wolves, Bears, and Horses. They also tend to have smaller NPC buildings. There’s a reason the player tends to start in this biome.
