Sakura Wars director Tetsuya Ootsubo recently spoke with Twinfinite, and has said that his development team is open to making a sequel and expanding the game to other platforms.

When asked about the prospect of a sequel, Ootsubo said that "the development team would love to continue the series and that they're pushing to make it happen." There have been over 4 million copies shipped of the series after six entries, so perhaps there's enough interest to make another one.

But if it isn't enough, perhaps a release on Steam and Switch would help. Ootsubo said to Twinfinite, “We’d love to expand the audience for the game! We’re actively researching to see where there is high demand and determine what actions will be feasible.”

Sakura Wars sequel might be coming.

Another SEGA property got a second chance after releasing its game on Steam: Valkyria Chronicles. According to Shacknews, the PC port of Valkyria Chronicles was at the top of the Steam download charts and beat a bunch of brand-new games that came out that week. John Clark, the Senior Vice President of Commerical Publishing for SEGA Europe, at the time, called it a "phenomenal success" of a launch. Opening up Sakura Wars to a new audience on PC and Switch might be the way to get new fans interested in this steampunk world and could be enough evidence to put a sequel into production.

SEGA is in need of more standout franchises, as they are resting their laurels on the Sonic the Hedgehog, Yakuza, and Persona series of games. They dipped into their past library with the release of Sakura Wars, but it would be great to see other franchises like Super Monkey Ball, Skies of Arcadia, and Crazy Taxi get another shot. SEGA have opted to license some of their franchises to independent publishers and studios, like Alex Kidd, Shenmue, and Streets of Rage in the past.

DotEmu, LizardCube, and Guard Crush Games absolutely nailed Streets of Rage 4. The game had a fresh coat of paint with a hand-drawn style, and the combat felt just as good as the previous games in the series. We had a glowing review of it when it released earlier this year, and it's Metacritic score ranges from 82-86. Let's hope more classic SEGA games get the same treatment. Perhaps a reboot of classic SEGA title could be one of DotEmu's 3 unannounced games!
