In Trek to Yomi, players assume the role of young swordsman Hiroki who, as a vow to his dying master, is sworn to protect his town and the people he loves against all threats. So far, so samurai, and in a gameplay trailer that has been released it seems Trek to Yomi is going full-on with the classic samurai movie vibes.

Developed by Polish studio Flying Wild Hog and published by Texas-based Devolver Digital who publishes many indie games, Trek to Yomi was announced in June. Featuring stylish visuals, with decidely Akira Kurosawa tones and cinematics, and running in black and white, Trek to Yomi is a homage to the classic samurai movies that many older Japanese people grew up with. With stories focused on revenge, duty, honour, and, of course, swordfighting, Trek to Yomi fulfills those expectations.

"Faced with tragedy and bound to duty, the lone samurai must voyage beyond life and death to confront himself and decide his path forward," reads the game's description.

The gameplay trailer shows off the game's tight focus on combat. The narrow paths and somewhat linear levels recall Onimusha, while the visuals are impressively atmospheric. There are smoky rooms and fighting behind paper screen doors, with only the silhouettes of the combatants showing. The style of gameplay also hearkens back to the traditional side scrollers that were popular in 1980s arcades.

A sword doesn't seem to be your only weapon, either, as in one instance in the trailer the use of a fire rocket is shown, which shoots out a blast against a couple of assailants. Yomi will feature supernatural enemies as well - Yomi is the underworld in Japanese mythology. However, the new trailer only briefly shows off an enemy who could be supernatural. Otherwise, there is one instance where Hiroki, the player's character, can be seen descending a cavern, while the combat looks suitably bloody, with decapitation making an appearance.

Trek to Yomi is due to launch on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC. It will also be available via Xbox Game Pass. Players can expect to wield that katana in spring 2022.
