There are so many experiences in life that we just love feeling, even if they're completely illogical. One of the top ones, though, would have to be the obsession with scaring ourselves half to death.

Horror media is one of the most popular things out there. Sure, plenty of it is actually of pretty poor quality, but the fear they can induce throughout can supersede the quality. And what better setting to instil horror than a good ol' haunted house? Gaming has plenty of dilapidated old homes that have become the refuge of spirits, and these ones are sure to send a chill down your spine.

8 Shinra Manor - Final Fantasy 7

Final Fantasy 7 Cloud Finds Vincent In A Coffin

Final Fantasy is an old series, one of the first games to actually try their hand at deeper storytelling. The games have evolved and shifted so much over the years, and each game stands wonderfully on its own. None of them are horror games per se, but Final Fantasy 7 hosts a few frights, more than you might expect.

Ignoring the horror of the original English translation, the Shinra Manor in Nibelheim is an unsettling place. Gone to ruins after the collapse of Nibelheim's reactor, it's all dust and secrets now. The music inside is eerie, and every enemy is some fearful apparition. Going down into the spooky basement only to find Vincent preaching cryptic babble while lying in a coffin makes it all the more unusual.

7 Spencer Mansion - Resident Evil 1

The Spencer Mansion from Resident Evil HD Remaster

Resident Evil is a franchise that is constantly reinventing itself. It will have a run of successful games, start running dry and shift into something dramatically different. It's formulaic like that. That said, the series, though always trying for something new, has never reached the heights of horror achieved by the original.

Classed as being one of the games that revitalised zombies and horror in general, the Spencer Manor in the original is an all-time great. That opening hallway is iconic, as well as the first zombie appearance, but there's so much more than that. The moans of dead souls, the flashes of lightning, the tight areas, and the locked camera all add to the horror.

6 Himuro Mansion - Fatal Frame

One of the scariest aspects of ghosts is their unreliableness. They're never seen definitively, so you're left wondering if they've even appeared at all. The Fatal Frame series has you coming a bit more prepared. With the Camera Obscura by your side, you can take pictures of these spirits and maybe even put them to rest.

One of the scariest parts of Fatal Frame is that your camera is your only weapon. Most of the games feature a mansion of some variety for you to explore, with the original featuring the horrifying Himuro Mansion. Secluded away in the mountains, no one is likely to hear your screams, but at least you'll be coming back with some nice photos. If you make it out alive.

5 The Mansion - Luigi's Mansion

Luigi knocked down by ghosts in Luigi's Mansion

Originally planned only as a tech demo for the capabilities of the Gamecube, Luigi's Mansion was developed into a full launch title. Luigi, the oft-ignored brother of Mario, was chosen to give it an all-new perspective. The result was one of the best-selling Gamecube games and a classic light-horror game that gained its own franchise.

Luigi has always been portrayed as a scared person, jumping at his own shadow, so casting him as something of a ghostbuster was unconventional. Exploring this great mansion that's come into his possession and sucking up ghosts from flickering rooms and shadowy hallways is as enjoyable as it is scary. But hey, at least Luigi finally got some screen time.

4 Castle Brennenburg - Amnesia

A period came by the late 2000s when horror had fallen into a slump, and most legacy franchises had either gone on hiatus or turned into more action than horror. Amnesia then was a revelation, showing new ways of creating horror and breathing life into an ailing genre.

Set within Castle Brennenburg, the cold stone walls are never welcoming. The biggest fear in Amnesia, though, is your own sanity. Are there truly monsters roaming these dark halls, or are the shadows just playing tricks on your mind? There's no way to know for certain. Crying in the corner of an old wine cellar debating whether to turn on a light to save your sanity or leave it off to stop the monsters from seeing you is the entire game.

3 Old Chateau - Pokemon

For a game series that's aimed towards children and has so many playful, colourful characters, Pokemon sure does have a love for horror. From the unsettling everything of Lavender Town to the various ghostly figures you witness throughout the games, there are more than a few unfriendly apparitions here to keep you awake at night.

The Old Chateau from Gen Four is perhaps the most frightening of all. Located deep inside Eterna Forest, the Old Chateau is entirely optional. You enter only to be greeted by the butler, who subsequently walks away through a wall, never to be seen again. Paintings on walls follow you, stopping when you look at them. Ghosts are the only pokemon you'll see. For a child, it's enough to make you snap shut your DS and never look back.

2 Old Mansion - Kingdom Hearts 2

A wide view of the Old Mansion from Kingdom Hearts 2

Disney isn't the sort you'd associate with horror. It's far from the most marketable, profitable genre out there, which is really all that appeals to them. Kingdom Hearts, though, that wonderful fusion of Final Fantasy and Disney, gives it a brief whirl with the Old Mansion in the second game.

Located on the outskirts of Twilight Town, the Old Mansion is a horror story in itself. Sealed away and abandoned, no one goes near it for fear of ghosts. Brave children that you are, though, you do. Figures peer at you from the windows, and the music goes quiet to let you soak in the ambience. Rooms are all different, with little to no explanation. Having the mansion reveal itself as a mad experiment is almost a betrayal.

1 Cainhurst Castle - Bloodborne

Castle Cainhurst in Bloodborne

FromSoftware, despite being known for their Souls games, has actually had a brief foray into horror in the past, most notably with Kuon. The Souls games all hold some aspects of horror to them in themes and appearance, and Sekiro's deadly apparitions are a whole different tone from the rest of the game, but no game has quite achieved horror as Bloodborne has.

Being based in London is horrifying enough, and Yharnam as a whole is host to plenty of horrifying beasts. Cainhurst Castle, though is like something straight out of Dracula. A castle of blood-drinking nobles secluded away from the world. Ghosts shriek as you approach, shifting through walls to strike fear in your heart. Gothic architecture adorns every aspect, designed to instil dread.
