This generation encompasses games that were released after the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch launched. We're also going to include PC titles, of course. The following games are of the most frightening ever created, featuring horror icons from Slender Man to Freddy Krueger and a xenomorph from Alien.

10 Slender: The Arrival

You might be surprised by the amount of detail contained in this budget-friendly game. You should be able to pick up Slender: The Arrival for less than $10. The story revolves around the Slender Man, a mythical figure that originated as a creepypasta meme.

Slender: The Arrival uses jump scares to help you progress through the game. When you head the wrong way, the game punishes you by making Slender Man or other eerie characters appear.

9 Alien: Isolation

Reviews are mixed for Alien: Isolation, as not everyone appreciated the style of gameplay. Perhaps this game was ahead of its time, as many games take inspiration from Alien: Isolation today. The alien that you try to hide from is very intelligent, which makes the game painfully tricky.

It is a scary game that is both challenging and unforgiving. You should try Alien: Isolation if you're looking for a riveting sci-fi experience that's every bit as scary as the Alien movies it is based on.

8 Layers Of Fear

This psychological horror video game revolves around paintings, but is so much more than an art game. Layers of Fear encourages players to explore their environment, even though you'll find that the house is not ordinary. Layers of Fear can be compared to 2013's Gone Home, although it's a much more frightening prospect.

It will take approximately 4 hours to complete this game, but those who are new to first-person adventure games may take longer. Layers of Fear is a must play for those wanting to explore a haunted house.

7 The Evil Within

Although The Evil Within 2 is also scary, it seems like the original has a more horrific atmosphere. Monsters such as a figure with a metal mask and chainsaw and a butcher who wears a safe on his head make The Evil Within intensely frightening.

There is quite a bit of enemy variety to keep you entertained throughout The Evil Within. The artwork and story are praiseworthy for certain. In this case, you can't beat the original, and it certainly is scarier.

6 Kraven Manor

Kraven Manor is an indie free-to-play game that takes 1-2 hours to beat but delivers lots of scares. The game revolves around strange mannequins that chase you throughout the game. When you're not forced to look at the monster trying to kill you, the best option to survive Kraven Manor is to run fast and don't look back!

You may have seen YouTuber Marikiplier's Kraven Manor playthrough. You might not be as skillful as Markiplier, but sure enough, you shouldn't have too many problems completing this low-difficulty game. Make sure you play the game until the end, as Kraven Manor has an explosive conclusion.

5 Outlast 2

Outlast 2 is a significant improvement over its predecessor. In this sequel, you play as a cameraman. As such, the footage from Outlast 2 comes out brighter and more vivid. Also, features of the tools of your trade (such as a sensitive microphone that allows you to hear footsteps) make the experience of Outlast 2 much more intense.

Finding paths to avoid enemies is common in the game. The variety of NPCs in Outlast 2 makes it an arduous but enjoyable experience. A dark border on the camera also skews visibility, which makes the game frightfully difficult.

4 Until Dawn

Until Dawn is a horror game with a deeply unique cast of characters. It's similar in tone to movies like Cabin in the Woods and Friday the 13th. It is recommended to play this with a friend, as it really enhances the experience.

Until Dawn is one of the few games that use the framework of a classic horror story. With cameos from famous actors such as Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere and Peter Stormare there are too many reasons to play Until Dawn.

3 Dead By Daylight

Dead by Daylight is a scare-fest that should be played by fans of the horror genre. Iconic horror movie characters such as Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, Michael Myers from Halloween and Junior Sawyer from Texas Chainsaw Massacre are playable characters in Dead By Daylight.

Putting aside its numerous cameos, Dead By Daylight is bloodcurdling fun. You either play as a survivor or the killer in Dead By Daylight. To play, you'll need an internet connection, since the game is exclusively multiplayer online.

2 Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard's new spin on the franchise was a gutsy move for the company, but it paid off. After the disaster that was Resident Evil 6, developer Capcom needed to revamp their franchise. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is full of scares and fun gameplay as well.

We highly recommend you try Resident Evil 7 for yourself. Attempting to escape an eerie haunted house while locating your friends proves to be a gruelling and frightening experience. For the most intense experience, try Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in VR.

1 Resident Evil 2

Remakes and remasters don't always turn out how people hope, but when the developer puts in the effort, a remake can amaze. In Resident Evil 2, players take the role of protagonists Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, as they attempt to escape the disaster unfolding in Raccoon City. Don't worry about longevity, because this game will take over 20 hours to complete.

Resident Evil 2 is everything Resident Evil fans hoped for and more. Upcoming remakes like Final Fantasy VII should learn a few things from this game. Since Resident Evil 2 was rebuilt from the ground up, there was much potential for error, but instead, Capcom delivered possibly the best horror game of 2019.
