Subverse is a bit of a mashup of genres, including dating sim, twin-stick shooter, and tactical turn-based combat game all mixed in with some space exploration and RPG elements. And sex. Lots and lots of sex.
So, remember back in 2015 when Blizzard sent out a bunch of cease & desist orders to a certain pornographic animated film studio? That was Studio FOW. Founded in 2013 "by a couple of disgusting neckbeards" (their words, not mine), the studio specialized in pornographic parody videos of various video game characters such as Lara Croft, Ivy from SoulCalibur, and Jill Valentine (the legality of which remains questionable at best). In 2019, Studio FOW founded its own game division and Kickstarted Subverse, the studio's first-ever game featuring totally original characters.
Two years after raising $2.3 million on Kickstarter, Studio FOW has a release date for Subverse on Steam and Streemster. And because of that release date, we have a Steam page that gives us all the lurid details for this very sex-positive game.
You play as The Captain, an Australian "mad-lad" who stumbles across the Mary Celeste, an advanced stealth cruiser that has been floating abandoned in the middle of nowhere. The Captain tows it back to port and outfits the Mary Celeste with "brand new warp drives and an extended cargo bay for one purpose and one purpose only – smuggle a s----load of weed from point A to point B in the shortest amount of time possible."
Along the way, The Captain gets caught up in a galaxy-wide conflict that requires him to recruit up to nine “waifus” to help save the galaxy (again, game’s words, not mine). Each waifu gets their own special abilities and can level-up to become better "in battle AND the bedroom."
For all the jiggle physics and the obviously pornographic gameplay loop, Subverse promises to be a game first. There's no pay-to-win, no gacha, and no loot boxes. You get a single-player RPG for a one-time price that just happens to have a lot of highly detailed sex scenes in it. When it releases, Subverse will probably be the highest budget porn game Steam has ever seen.
Subverse releases on March 26, but you do have to be 18 or older to wishlist it on Steam.
