Nearly three decades after the release of the original Master of the Universe line of action figures, Mattel is updating its classic figures for He-Man and Skeletor. The release in the Fall of 2020 will be the first time that Mattel reworks the figures from the original line. Fans will have their first look at this year's San Diego Comic-Con event.

The new figures will stand at about 5.5-inches tall with increased articulation available, allowing for a broad range of positions to be taken in comparison to the originals from thirty years ago. Other improvements will focus on better paint jobs and new face molds to better reflect the details of the characters' original faces.

Action figures from films or shows that are rebooted years after an initial release are often made larger and more physically imposing. Mattel's updated figures, however, will remain largely the same in terms of size. This may be due to the fact that the original figures were ridiculously proportioned so any change would likely reduce this look, which is not the trend we usually see.

Luke Skywalker from Star Warsfor example, is a character whose action figure has been hyper-masculinized over time (despite the fact that his softer masculinity is portrayed as one of his strengths in the movies). This led some to question whether the representation of action figures targeted towards boys is leading to anxiety and issues related to a negative body image. The same issue has been brought up for years with regards to Barbie as well, but there is not likely to be any change in the action figure or doll-making industry. Profits are to be made, and the emotional well-being of children is not likely the first concern of boardroom executives.

When one compares the old and the new figures for He-Man, it is fairly safe to say that adding any more muscle would enter into the absurd - more so than we already have with the original.

While fans feeling nostalgic at the reveal may want to add these new figures of He-Man and Skeletor to their collections, they will need to wait as the release date of Fall 2020 is likely to tie into the upcoming Masters of the Universe film. For now, lucky SDCC attendees may be able to snag a few Comic-con exclusives at Mattel's booth this weekend.
