Next week we’re getting perhaps the biggest, most ambitious Sea of Thieves update yet: A Pirate’s Life. The expansion combines Rare’s original world with Pirates of the Caribbean, taking you on an adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow himself.

As well as introducing five new enemy types, five new Tall Tales, and a bunch of Pirates of the Caribbean-themed cosmetics for your ship and your character, we’re also getting a new shanty. We got the chance to speak to game director Mike Chapman in a recent interview and we asked about the new shanty and how you acquire it. If you want to find out for yourself what it is and how you get it, stop reading here.

“If you complete all of the commendations across all of the stories of A Pirate's life, you will lock ‘Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life For Me)’,” Chapman reveals. “If you see someone playing that, and you can play along with them, it's because they've done it all. They've done all the stories.”

You’ll also be able to show off your mastery of the expansion’s seas by cosplaying as Jack Sparrow himself, or by adorning your ship with ocean crawler cosmetics - colourful barnacles and other sea oddities.

Much of the expansion’s new features are also heading into the main sandbox, so you’ll be able to fight ghosts, sirens, and crustaceans while on the mainline adventures. A Pirate’s Life was designed to be a perfect jumping-on point for new players, allowing them to experience a more linear story than Sea of Thieves players are used to, easing them into this high-seas adventure. It’s coming on June 22 and you can read our full Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life interview with Mike Chapman at that link, ya wee scurvy dog.
