Who Is Captain Grimm?

Captain Grimm in Sea of Thieves

Captain Grimm is an Ashen Lord who serves under the command of Captain Flameheart. You will come across him during the Ashen Winds World Event, as he is one of the four Skeleton Lords who might be summoned to fight you.

Not much is known about his background, but it is said he was responsible for constructing fortresses and lairs for Captain Flameheart. He has also been previously defeated by Sir Arthur Pendragon, so if he can do it then so can you.

Where Can You Find Find Him?

Ashen Lord Location in Sea of Thieves

The Ashen Winds World Event is marked by a red tornado, but it tends to stick to a few key locations. Once you land here, then a ritual will begin where Captain Grimm might be summoned by Captain Flameheart.

The locations where this World Event is likely to spawn include:

  • Kraken's Fall
  • Marauder's Arch
  • Wanderer's Refuge
  • Mermaid's Highway
  • Devil's Ridge
  • Canon Cove
  • Shipwreck Bay

Defeating Captain Grimm In Battle

All of the Ashen Lords use the same moves, but the taunt that signals when an attack is coming is different. He will usually bring his arms up to his chest and then squat down before he sends out his attack, which will be more powerful than anything you experience in PVP combat.

The attacks he might use are as follows:

  • Melee Attack
  • Fire Breath
  • Lunge Attack
  • Boulder Throw
  • Summon Skeletons
  • Ash Cloud
  • Shockwave
  • Volcanic Eruption

Melee Attack

Kneeling Ashen Lord in Sea of Thieves

The Melee Attack is fairly straightforward as Captain Grimm will lash out at anyone who is within range of his arms. He will strike them, which will knock them back, as well as take a chunk off their health.

It is best to attack him from behind to prevent his arms from dealing damage to you while you are within his reach. You should also wait until he is kneeling, as this means he is vulnerable and able to be openly attacked.

Fire Breath

Ashen Lord Fire Breath in Sea of Thieves

Once Captain Grimm starts to take quite a bit of damage, then he releases something called Fire Breath. It is literally a flame that shoots from his mouth as he tries to push players back, and it is a reason why he is one of the strongest enemies you will face.

This will deal heavy damage, and it is best just to avoid him when this happens, or use a gun, as his body is also aflame and can harm you from any angle.

Lunge Attack

If you decide to keep your distance, this Ashen Lord understands how to counter this as well. He uses something called a Lunge Attack where he will jump forward and knock you back, as well as deal damage to you.

You will have to keep an eye out for this and watch his tells to prepare to move when he is ready to strike.

Boulder Throw

Ashen Lord Boulder Throw in Sea of Thieves

There are two different types of boulder throws which include:

  • Small Boulder Throw
  • Large Boulder Throw

The Small Boulder Throw involves throwing a small rock large distances and it will deal some light damage to a player. However, if you are hit by a large boulder it could end the fight in your death, and if you do manage to survive you will be lit on fire.

If you see Captain Grimm gearing up to throw anything your best choice is to stay on the move so you can do your best to avoid the incoming projectiles.

Summon Skeletons

Ashen Lord Skeletons in Sea of Thieves

This Ashen Lord doesn't come without his own minions to aid him in this fight, as he has the ability to summon Skeletons. They will be Ashen Skeletons, but they can spawn with a variety of weapons.

They might have a Cutlass, Blunderbuss, Flintlock, or even no weapon at all, but no matter what they can all be taken out with a Cutlass. You should focus your attention on these when they do spawn so you can then get back to the fight at hand.

Ash Cloud

Ash Cloud in Sea of Thieves

You might already have a hard time seeing during this fight, but Captain Grimm knows how to make it even more difficult. He uses an Ash Cloud to spread a thick, dark cloud over the area to drastically lower visibility.

You should try to stay close to Captain Grimm so you don't lose sight of him, but if you do make sure to stay on your guard.

Shockwave

The second phase of the attack brings on new challenges, and one of those is called a Shockwave. Captain Grimm will pound the ground and anyone who is nearby will be lit on fire.

This will deal heavy damage and send you flying backward through the air, with more damage being dealt the closer you are to him. It will also damage your ship as well if it is too close to the fight, whether it is a Sloop, Brigantine, or Galleon.

Volcanic Eruption

Volcanic Eruption in Sea of Thieves

When Captain Grimm sees the end in sight and feels he is losing his ground, then he will summon a Volcanic Eruption. It will send volcanic rocks that come from the sky and he will use this in tandem with the Fire Breath attack.

The volcanic rocks will instantly kill you and new obstacles will appear on the island as well. You should switch to your gun at this point in the fight as a close-range weapon doesn't fare well for the player in this final stage.

Rewards

Ashen Winds Skull in Sea of Thieves

When you defeat Captain Grimm he will drop you a few rewards which include the Ashen Wind's Skull and 15 Devil's Roar treasure items. This could include things like Trinkets, Cargo Crates, Bounty Skulls, and more.

The one cool thing is that the Ashen Wind's Skull can be used as a weapon. It can shoot out a limited amount of fire that does damage to players and objects. However, using the skull for this will deplete its value, so it is best just to hold onto it.
